Training is all about being prepared.

We train, so what we do becomes easier. We train, because it helps us learn and grow stronger. We train, so we are as best prepared for any circumstances. We train, because it causes unity within our brigade.

Saturdays training was no different. We are even training with different equipment incase the fuel shortage last longer… we just need to find the right cart for the little fella to pull.

Thank you to all members for giving up your Saturday afternoon.

Vale John Bell.

It is with great sadness that we share that one of our brigade members, John Bell, passed away on Saturday 21st of March.

John has been officially a member of Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade for well over 30 years… and unofficially for even more. As a community member John would turn up with his tractor and 500 litre water spray unit on the back and offer up his services. John was always on hand to help out and sometimes the dog would come along for the ride too.

During his tenure, he took on the role of 2nd officer… which is a pivotal role in the onboarding and welcoming the new members through the brigade and assisting with the running of the brigade.

John took on the role as Education Officer, and took the message of fire safety, too Palmwoods State School… a program that is still running to this day. Each year, John would talk with the grade 5 students about fire danger and also take the children out to set the fire indicator board that was beside the oval, near the Lander Shute road turn off. Fires over the school holidays, dropped dramatically in the Palmwoods Community from this work.

When active fire fighting no longer was viable for John, he continued his education work… but also shared a number of stories with brigade members… where we would sit and listen in awe.

John, thank you for your service to Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade, the Queensland Fire Department… but more importantly the Palmwoods and surrounding communities.

To his wife Janice, sons Andrew & Robert and grandchildren Cooper, Sebastian, Dakota and Zara we send our love and condolences.

Rest in Peace John, we have it from here.

As a brigade last night we took a few minutes out of our monthly meeting to mention and honour one of our members, Digger!!

Digger has just ticked over 20 years of service to Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade.

Digger not only gets an extra helmet on the brigades honour board, but was presented with a special water bottle to mark the occasion too.

Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to our brigade… you are not only a valuable member of the brigade but the whole community.

**Digger pictured here with his good mate, Malcolm, who has also been with the brigade for some time… (see if you notice on the honour board). A bit of a then and now photo. Thanks guys for your work you do for our brigade and our community**

🔥 Fire Season Awareness – Why Preparation Matters 🔥

The images above highlight the scale of the Longwood bushfire currently burning in Victoria.

As of 15 January 2026, the fire has burned approximately 137,000 hectares — an area comparable in size to a large portion of the Sunshine Coast. Media reporting indicates 173 homes have been destroyed and one life has been lost, showing how quickly fires can escalate under severe conditions.

While fire conditions in South East Queensland have not been as extreme this season, under the right weather and fuel conditions, a fire of this magnitude could have devastating impacts locally.

This is why Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade takes hazard reduction seriously. Throughout 2025, our brigade conducted multiple planned hazard reduction burns to reduce fuel loads, slow potential fire spread, and improve safety for firefighters and the community in the event of an emergency.

It’s also important not to become complacent. Serious fires occurred locally last year, including the Obi Obi Road fire, reminding us that our region is not immune.

Preparation, early action and fuel reduction save lives and property.
