Six World Cups. Six unique squads. One constant: Westfields Sports High School ⚽

While the Australian men's football team readies itself for the World Cup opener against Türkiye on Sunday (AEST),Westfields Sports High School has been helping to prepare them for decades.

Known for its production line of Matildas, the Fairfield West 'Football Factory' has also schooled a stream of Socceroos including current goalkeeper and captain Maty Ryan, his back-up Patrick Beach and defender Milos Degenek.

The trio continues an incredible World Cup roll call from the school, with Westfields boasting players in every squad since the Socceroos re-entered the competition in 2006.

“We have kids in our football program for six to eight years,” the school’s Deputy Principal David Barrett said. “We get to build a lot into that time, not only out on the sporting field but developing young men and women. I truly think that’s the secret.”

It's a philosophy at the heart of the school's High Potential and Gifted Education approach: flexible, student-centred, and committed to developing the whole person rather than just the athlete.

Whitebridge High School rock band Trophy Wyfe are on a path to success after winning triple j's national 2026 Unearthed High competition. 😮🎸

This year Unearthed High attracted more than 1000 entries from high school-aged artists across Australia, with the triple j Unearthed team listening to every track and selecting many for airplay.

Trophy Wyfe comprises Rex Wardle and Tallis Kessell, both in Year 12, and Neve Scully, who graduated last year. Their mix of indie-rock and post-punk earnt them the win with their single ‘Spiders’.

Relieving Principal Melita Morrow said the whole school was thrilled with their success.

“They’ve worked really hard and made the most of the creative arts opportunities we offer through our High Potential and Gifted Education program.

“The back-catalogue of triple j contest winners might look daunting with bands like Silverchair, but I’m confident Trophy Wyfe will enjoy the moment and grab the opportunities this throws up with both hands as they work towards their debut album.”

The school and triple j arranged a surprise reveal of the winning band with an invitation to play at their school assembly to celebrate being finalists.

Kingscliff captain selected for National Youth Parliament! 👨‍🎓📚

Year 12 student and Kingscliff High School captain Archie is one of only 150 secondary students from across Australia selected to attend the National Youth Parliament in Canberra this August.

Participants of the program will take part in simulated parliamentary debates, workshops with political leaders and real-world policy discussions, while learning how Parliament works and how laws are developed and passed.

Kingscliff High School Relieving Principal Damien Borg said the school community was proud of Archie’s achievement.

“Archie’s achievement reflects the aims of Inspire – High Potential and Gifted Education, the NSW Department of Education’s approach to strengthening opportunities for students to be challenged and supported in public schools," Mr Borg said.

Archie said his role as school captain had helped spark a deeper interest in politics and the opportunities available to young people in regional communities.

“One of the things I’m passionate about is improving opportunities for young people in regional parts of Australia, particularly by enhancing access to education, career pathways and practical courses that can help young people reach their full potential,” Archie said.

“I hope this program will provide me with valuable insight into what a future in that area might look like.”

The initiative plays an important role in strengthening civics education, giving young people the opportunity to better understand Australia’s political system and have a voice on the issues that matter to them.
