It’s Origin night!

If you’re cooking, don’t get distracted by the scoreboard. Keep looking when cooking, keep heaters clear, and make sure your smoke alarms are working before kick-off.

Recently, our crews responded to a recycling truck carrying approximately six tonnes of material that caught fire. Quick thinking by the driver saw the load safely unloaded onto a quiet street, preventing the fire from spreading to the truck itself.

Incidents like this are becoming increasingly common and are often linked to batteries being incorrectly disposed of in general waste or recycling bins. Even small household batteries can become damaged or crushed during collection and processing, causing fires that place drivers, waste workers, firefighters and the community at risk.

Please help keep everyone safe by never placing batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, into your household rubbish or recycling bins. Dispose of them responsibly through approved battery recycling collection points.

A small action at home can prevent a major fire.

A working smoke alarm can make all the difference in a home fire.

Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM joined Sunrise to remind the community about the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home.
