It will now cost you twice as much if your vehicle fails our on-the-spot noise tests.

We've updated the state's Noise Control Regulation, with tougher penalties for offensive neighbourhood noise now in force across NSW.

The key changes include:

◾ Doubling on-the-spot fines for noisy vehicles, including those with defective or modified noise control equipment
◾ Making landowners and occupiers responsible for off-road vehicle noise on private property
◾ Exempting air conditioners from noise restrictions during severe and extreme heatwaves

Developed following extensive community consultation, the updated rules aim to better manage neighbourhood noise while allowing people to go about their everyday activities.

We’re putting pesticide users in Coffs Harbour on notice.

This week, our officers are out across the Upper Hunter as part of our annual Bust the Dust campaign, conducting unannounced inspections to ensure mines are managing dust and protecting local communities.

It follows strong results in 2025, when staff carried out 34 inspections across 12 open-cut mines and found appropriate dust mitigation measures were in place.

The video showcases some of the ways we've supported environmental monitoring in the past, including the use of drones in other operational work.

They buried so much waste the land grew several metres in height.

73,000 tonnes of asbestos contaminated waste.

The illegal dumping occurred over two years at this property, and an adjoining road at Wheeny Creek, near Wollemi National Park.

We prosecuted a man and an earthmoving company for knowingly transporting contaminated building waste to the property between September 2020 and June 2022.

Our investigators captured hundreds of truckloads coming and going from the site.

The Court found the defendants guilty on all six charges.

Remember 2003?

This turtle is attempting to break a Guinness World Records.

Looking to complete the fastest marathon dressed as a turtle at TCS Sydney Marathon.

Keep an eye out for the turtle who will be raising awareness about the impacts of litter.

Seven dental practices across NSW have been fined for breaches of Radiation Management Licence conditions, including failures to conduct required compliance testing on radiation equipment.

Our investigation found required compliance testing had not been conducted on 19 items of radiation equipment, such as X-Ray and OPG unit used for diagnostic imaging.

While no evidence of actual harm was identified, the testing requirements help ensure radiation equipment operates safely and meets radiation protection standards.

From Harley-Davidsons to Holden Commodores, any vehicle can be selected for inspection during a noisy vehicles compliance campaign.

This Commodore wagon might not look modified, but it was issued a defective vehicle notice during a joint compliance operation in Wollongong after failing a noise test and being found without a catalytic converter system fitted.

The owner must now rectify the exhaust noise issue and ensure all emissions control equipment complies with the vehicle's original manufacturer specifications.

Of the 21 vehicles tested during our latest operation, 16 were issued Defective Vehicle Notices.

Appearances can be deceiving. That's why compliance operations target all types of vehicles, not just the obvious ones.

This inspection was a collaborative effort between us, NSW Police Forcee and Transport for NSW.

Someone threw a battery in the bin. Next minute fire fighters were putting out a fire in a garbage truck.

This latest incident was in Surry Hills, and it was the third such garbage truck fire in NSW in less than a week!

Lithium-ion batteries can ignite when crushed, putting drivers, firefighters and the community at risk. They’re also the fastest growing fire risk in NSW.

We’ve ordered a North Coast skip bin business to remove 320 tonnes of illegally dumped waste from a rural property associated with the operator.

Our investigation found contaminated waste, including asbestos and mixed construction and demolition materials, has been stockpiled on the site.

Waste collectors are responsible for disposing of material at authorised facilities. The landowner has until 2 November 2026 to clean up the site.

When hiring a skip bin you should ask the operator to confirm where they dispose of the waste and provide receipts.
