Orange you glad for the upgrade? (We couldn’t resist)

The Ophir Road Resource Recovery Centre has a brand-new drop-off system, making it safer, faster and better for recycling.

Those using the facility will now drop off waste at ground level, removing the need to unload from elevated areas.

👉 No more unloading from heights

👉 Quicker drop-offs

👉More materials recovered instead of going to landfill

The EPA is proud to have contributed around $120,000 towards the upgrade.

Banned plastic straws were found attached to H2coco poppers on Woolworths shelves.

Both companies have been required to remove two drinks containing banned straws from sale across NSW:

- H2coco Young Green Coconut Water 200ml
- H2coco Chocolate Flavoured Coconut Water 200ml

The good news...

- Remaining stock will be donated to food rescue organisations where possible
- Paper straws will be used for future products

Did you know?
Single-use plastic straws have been banned since 2022. Integrated plastic items attached to packaged food and drinks, including plastic straws attached to juice boxes and poppers, were banned from 1 January 2025.

Big exhausts. A massive spoiler. More than one convertible.

We heard them before we saw them.

Across two nights in Sydney’s CBD, 34 suspect vehicles were selected for inspection based on what we could see and hear.

After noise testing we issued:

👉 25 defect notices

👉 23 fines totalling $8,450

The compliance blitz in Barangaroo with NSW Police Force and Transport for NSW follows multiple community reports of noisy vehicles in the area.

Please keep reporting noisy vehicles: bit.ly/ReportNoisyVehicles

Veolia has been issued a Clean Up Notice after ammonia and other pollutants were detected in groundwater within the Woodlawn underground mine near Tarago.

We’re asking Veolia Australia & New Zealand to conduct further investigations about the source and extent of the pollution which may be leaching from their landfill site.

The independent investigation will be overseen by the EPA and help determine next steps.

This is the impact discarded or unattended fishing line and hooks have on our wildlife.

Nicknamed 'Nemo', the wild platypus was found in the Far North Coast of NSW early this year entangled with an embedded three-pronged lure in his front flipper and a puncture wound to his bill.

This special wildlife patient serves as an important reminder that all animals, including freshwater mammals, are highly susceptible to injuries from litter.

An incredible thanks to Bangalow Vets, Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital and Taronga Zoo Sydney for keeping this little fella going after 9-weeks in care.

His progress is being closely monitored to assess his suitability for release to the wild.

Dairy fined for foul smells.

We’ve fined Hexham Manufacturing for failing to maintain its plant equipment, resulting in sewage-like odours from its dairy processing facility.

After we received several complaints from the community, the Newcastle company undertook an extensive desludging operation to reduce the smell.

Anyone who experiences strong or unusual odours should report them to the EPA’s Environment Line at [email protected], with as much detail as possible to support our investigations.

How often do you see waste illegally dumped?

It’s a serious problem for 98% of NSW councils.

We’re doing something about it.

$1.2 million will be spent on 19 projects across the state to target hotspots, deter repeat offenders and protect communities and the environment.

These projects will help with surveillance, clean-ups, stronger enforcement and education campaigns.

You can help by reporting illegal dumping - https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/Your-environment/Illegal-dumping

Fires at waste facilities are difficult to extinguish and can burn for many months.

They can cause harm to the environment and smoke impacts on communities.

That’s why it’s so important that landfills are meeting their environmental obligations and managing waste effectively.

Last week, an operator of a landfill site in North West NSW has been ordered to pay $52,000 after a fire started due to breaching their Environment Protection Licence.
