NSW Household Problem Wastes

NSW Household Problem Wastes Official page for Community Recycling Centres and Household Chemical CleanOuts across NSW. Welcome to the NSW Household Problem Waste Page.

This page is managed and moderated by the NSW Environment Protection Authority. You’ll find us online during business hours (9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday). We’ll do our best to respond to you within 2 business days, however we may take longer during busy periods. We appreciate your patience. Many household products are potentially harmful, including cleaning products, paints, pool chemicals, garden

products and hobby chemicals. Leftover or unwanted materials like these, referred to as ‘household problem wastes’, require special treatment and processing and cannot be placed in your bins. NSW householders can now safely dispose of household problem wastes, free of charge, via two convenient collection systems:

1. Household Chemical CleanOut
Household Chemical CleanOut is a mobile collection service for the safe disposal of a range of household chemical products, including household cleaners, pool and hobby chemicals and pesticides. CleanOut events are held at various locations in NSW on specified dates throughout the year.

2. Community Recycling Centres
Community Recycling Centres are permanent drop-off facilities, open year round, for the safe disposal of selected common household problem wastes such as paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, motor and cooking oils, car and household batteries, fluorescent tubes and globes, and smoke detectors. Many of the materials collected can be recycled if they undergo special treatment and processing. For more information, please visit www.cleanout.com.au

PSA: Test your smoke alarm.

Last year, nearly half the homes damaged or destroyed by fire in NSW did not have a working smoke alarm!

A working smoke alarm is your best early warning sign of a fire, giving you and your loved ones the chance to get out, stay out, and call Triple Zero (000).

Two things to remember:

- When replacing batteries, take the unwanted one to a safe battery drop-off point - never bin a battery
- Drop off any broken smoke alarms at a Community Recycling Centre or Household Chemical CleanOut

Not sure which service best suits your cleaning out needs?

Let us give you a helpful/friendly hand.

Think of Community Recycling Centres like a friend that's always there to support you.

Whereas, Household Chemical CleanOut is that friend that you only see once, sometimes twice a year when they come to visit.

Your visit to the local Community Recycling Centre adds up.

Let's take a look back at what the community has achieved since CRCs opened in 2014.

Most items accepted can be reused or recycled.

Dropping off these items:
- helps improve recycling rates
- saves water, energy and other valuable natural resources

Happy World Recycling Day!
