A new blood donation is needed every 18 seconds in Australia. One donation can save up to three lives!

On Tuesday Hurstville SES members rolled up their sleeves and donated blood. 🩸Blood donation is vital to Australia’s hospitals, where a daily supply is used to treat a range of patients!

As always the team at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Hurstville made us feel very welcomed, it’s almost like we are part of the family now! 🧡

August 12th is International Youth Day!

Today we celebrate the youth in our community who step up and get involved to make a difference.

We are fortunate at Hurstville SES to have our very own bunch of young people! They bring fresh ideas, perspectives, enthusiasm and a strong sense of teamwork throughout everything that they do. Whether they’re participating in training, lending a hand at community events, or responding to incidents, their contribution matters.

We are thankful for their commitment to the Hurstville Unit and across our local community 🧡

Working Together to Keep Our Community Safe!

At NSW SES Hurstville Unit, keeping our community safe is a team effort. While many people know us for responding to storms and floods, our role often involves working alongside other emergency services and essential service providers.

Whether assisting NSW Police 👮 in land search operations, supporting Fire and Rescue NSW 🧑‍🚒with the removal of large fallen branches, or coordinating with Ausgrid ⚡️ to manage hazards involving damaged powerlines, our volunteers are part of a broader multi-agency response network.

These partnerships ensure incidents are managed safely and efficiently; with the right expertise on hand.

Together, we help build a safer and more resilient community. 🧡

🗓️ July in Review 🗓️

July was a busy and rewarding month for our volunteers at the Hurstville Unit. From community engagement to ongoing operational readiness, our team remained dedicated to serving the local community.

Here is a look at what kept our unit moving throughout the month:

Community Education 🌩️ Our members spent time visiting a local pre school to teach young children about how SES helps the community during severe weather.

Lions Club Christmas in July 🍴 A heart-felt thank you to Lions Club of Lugarno for treating our members to a wonderful Christmas in July dinner. We are looking forward to assisting this year’s Spring Festival on September 20 at Gannons Park

New Recruits Onboarded 🟠 We welcomed our newest cohort of volunteers to the Hurstville team. Following induction training, these recruits will be job-ready and will be out and about assisting in the orange as soon as possible.

Skills & Training Maintenance 🪢 Members continued rigorous weekly training activities, focusing on storm damage operations, roof safety, chainsaw maintenance, and navigation skills.

Operational Readiness 🌳 Despite generally stable winter weather across Sydney, our crews responded to a steady stream of requests for assistance.

✨ Introducing Our Unit ✨

Meet Daniel, our Deputy Rescue Officer!

Daniel joined our unit in 2022 with the willingness to provide support to the community and get involved in whatever capacity required. Outside SES Daniel is a Formwork Carpenter and he is able to use his professional knowledge to provide valuable training and familiarisation sessions for our members.

Daniel stepped into the Deputy Rescue Officer in April 2026 and he has loved every second of it! Daniel's role requires him to assist the Rescue Officer to ensure training needs and activities are organised and executed correctly. Daniel ensures that our teams are completing all tasks required to finalise an incident when crews are called out into the community. Daniel directly liaises with all members of our unit and is available for a chat at any time.

Daniel involves himself with all that we do at Hurstville and gets involved with broader SES activities. Daniel has participated in Navshield, completed his Chainsaw Course in Tumut (his first qualification!) and supported the community during wet weather events. Daniel is all about creating unforgettable memories and experiences!

Daniel loves that SES “brings responsibility to [his] life” that creates a “true sense of togetherness” with his fellow members. During his time at Hurstville and SES, Daniel has created “everlasting relationships and memories”.

Thank you Daniel to all you do for the unit and the community 🧡

Daniel’s advice to those wanting to join the SES community? “Have a go and come be part of something great … SES is the place to be”

⚠️ AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system across Australia.

‼️ On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The test times across Australian time zones are:
• 2:00 pm AEST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS)
• 1:30 pm ACST (SA, NT, Broken Hill NSW)
• 12:00 pm AWST (WA)

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds.

If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.
