🦕 World Dinosaur Day 🦖

Not too far away from Moonlit lies the Wonthaggi Formation; a geological formation containing fossils from the Early Cretaceous period. Teeth, footprints, vertebrate, and even femurs have been uncovered at various sites across the formation, providing fascinating insight into Moonlit Sanctuary's local dinosaurs!

Koolasuchus cleelandi
This carnivorous amphibian measured 4-5 metres, and is estimated to have weighed around 500kg. They came equipped with sharp, serrated teeth that are thought to have been used for grabbing prey and dragging it down into the water. Koolasuchus is the official state fossil of Victoria 🏆

Galleonosaurus dorisae
A two-legged dinosaur that was similar in size to a wallaby. Unlike their larger cousins, these small ornithopods seemed to have thrived on the forested flood plains in the region, which was a rift valley formed as Australia and Antarctica were first separating over 120 million years ago.

Australovenator sp,
Australovenator is a genus of dinosaurs belonging to the family Megaraptoridae. These bipedal carnivores weighed between 300-500kg, around 1.6m tall, and 5-6m long. Individuals that lived in the Moonlit area would have preyed upon speedy ornithopods like Galleonosaurus, so it's theorised that these dinosaurs were quite agile despite their size.

Short-beaked echidnas have thick humerus bones in their front legs which allows for extra muscle growth, giving echidnas the strength to flip rocks and tear apart rotting logs 🪵

Margot was thrilled when keepers added this log to the enclosure, and wasted no time in digging in... quite literally! Using her long digging claws, she ripped apart the brittle centre and excavated herself the perfect echidna hidey-hole.

Violet the gang gang cockatoo decided that a feather dropped by one of her housemates was the ideal entertainment for the afternoon and spent her time carefully preening the feather until it looked good as new, even roping her boyfriend, Crumble, into lending a hand 🪶

Not only are they really cute to look at, but the toe beans of a quoll can help differentiate between the species!

Some quolls, like Eastern and Western quolls, spend a lot of their time on the ground, and have paw pads with a granulated pattern. Meanwhile, other species that spend more time up in the trees, like spot-tailed and Northern quolls, have striated paw pads! This pattern is more suited to their arboreal lifestyle, as the ridges give them better grip when climbing trees.

Eastern quolls have extra unique tootsies, as they're the only quoll species with four toes instead of five on their back feet 🐾
