Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail

The Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail is set on 4.45 hectares of land overlooking the stunning Hog Bay, within the centre of the township of Penneshaw.

🎁The Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail has received an amazing new gift. 'Give Way' was purchased from the estate of beloved local artist Indiana James.

Our thanks to local trail supporters David Hay and Michael Speers for their generous donation.

'Give Way' is a life-sized western grey kangaroo inspired by the wildlife around James’ home near Pelican Lagoon. Fashioned from road signs and number plates, it's a statement on the tension between the Island's wildlife and man, inviting us to reconsider our impact on the natural world.

Thanks to Indy's wife, Linda Jenkins, for the donation of the hanging polyhedrons which complete the installation so beautifully.

Ellipsis by artist George Andric absolutely sparkling in the sunshine. Its stunning form changing from every angle. It evokes thoughts of the rare paper nautilus shells that only very lucky beachcombers find on our shores.

A walk around the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail is like a treasure hunt, with something new to find around every corner.

But not all the treasures are sculptures. The trail is home to many forms of wildlife living harmoniously amongst the installations. It is truly art enmeshed with nature.

Come for a winter walk, the trail is absolutely lush with life at this time of year.

Lush views from every angle. 'Windrider' by beloved island artist Deb Sleeman comes into her own on stormy days when she pivots with the wind.

This sculpture embodies a free spirit, a timeless entity who, although grounded in the real world, manages to harness energy from elsewhere and use it positively in her daily life.

It honours the women of this Island, First Nations, Settler and Contemporary women who have come from all cardinal points of the compass. They are all wind-riders; their dreams, imagination, resilience and hard work have helped to shape the fabric of our community.

You can catch glimpses of Windrider from around the trail, but don't miss seeing her up close. She is anchored by a collection of tiles handmade by local women, celebrating their connection to our Island.

This installation was made possible through the contributions of the community, family & friends of Sarah Strong-Law.

🪶GLOSSY BLACK TAKING SHAPE | Thanks to all our incredibly generous donors, our Glossy Black installation is fully funded, and artist Dave Clarke is well underway with its creation.

Standing at 3 metres tall, 'Glossy Black' will be formed from steel, glass, and granite by artist Dave Clarke, a long-time resident of Kangaroo Island. This artwork honours our community's dedication to protecting the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoos of Kangaroo Island, with special recognition of community stalwart Bryon Buick. Bryon devoted many decades to creative and environmental initiatives in support of his beloved Glossy Blacks.

We can't wait to invite you to the commissioning of this very special piece.

So wonderful to see our installation 'Progression' settling into its environment.

Crafted by artist on the island using reclaimed materials, 'Progression' is a memorial and a celebration of the resourcefulness of the Kangaroo Island community and its maritime history.

It honours the residents who have made the isolation of the Island what it is today from their ancestors and families building the homes and infrastructure, to their descendants who maintain the Island’s way of life, and the new arrivals who wish to contribute to the uniqueness of finding a home on Kangaroo Island.

Made possible through the generous donations of a number of families as a way to honour the multi-generation connection to Kangaroo Island including:
Thomas Lashmar family, Margot Rosser, and Cath & Geoff Rischbieth, Jayne Bates Kym Smith & Holmes.

Easter & Autumn school holidays are a time to slow down after a hectic start to the year.

It's a perfect time to spend an hour or two wandering the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail. With the natural bushland coming to life, you can explore what's new & count the wallabies frolicking amongst the sculptures.

Our sculpture trail is created & cared for by our community for you to enjoy. It's free for all, but if you can make a small donation, you'll help fund our next instalment.

Now this is going to be special! | We're excited to share our latest project: the creation of 'Glossy Black,' a stunning sculpture in steel, glass and granite by artist Dave Clarke .

This artwork will honour the legacy of Bryon Buick, a fifth-generation Kangaroo Islander, gifted artist, and founding member of the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail, who was central to the trail's creation and design from its inception.

Bryon dedicated countless hours to beautifying the Penneshaw community, from designing and building the winding paths to creating stunning town gardens. His passions extended to protecting Kangaroo Island’s unique wildlife, with a special passion for the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo.

Now, after requests from Bryon's family and community, we're excited to partner with artist Dave Clarke, a fellow founding trail member and close friend of Bryon, to bring this special installation to life.

We invite you to help this project come to life. Your donation will help create 'Glossy Black'. Any funds raised beyond our target will go toward fulfilling Bryon's dream of an arbour along the trail.
