On Thursday the 19th of February,
YHAC members were invited to Albert Facey House by to attend a meeting with members of the Australian and New Zealand Children’s Comissioners, Guardians and Advocates, alongside other youth advocates from a range of organisations.

During the meeting, we discussed the challenges young people are facing today, including the ongoing housing crisis and the limitations within existing services. It was a valuable opportunity to share lived experiences and contribute to conversations focused on systemic change.

YHAC is grateful for the opportunity to be part of an ongoing conversation that recognises and values the perspectives of young people, and we look forward to ensuring that the voices, needs and demands of young people continue to inform policy and decision making.

On Sunday, YACWA CEO Kylie and YHAC member Caitlan spoke with about the realities young people face when trying to navigate school while experiencing homelessness 🎒

As students across WA begin a new school year, children and young people without stable housing are facing additional and often invisible barriers to accessing education.

That’s why we’re calling on the WA Government to take immediate action to end child and youth homelessness through targeted, meaningful investment. 📣🏠

This past Monday, YHAC members visited St Patrick’s Community Support Centre in Fremantle! ☀️
We loved learning about their new Family Support Program and having meaningful conversations about the support they’re providing to families, children and young people. There’s some really great work happening - keep an eye on our page to see more of what’s coming up! 👀🏘

The 2025 Rental Affordability Snapshot (RAS) has dropped! 💥 ⬇️

Each year, RAS measures the likelihood of individuals on income support in varying situations finding a suitable home to rent in the private market. While we have seen a slight increase in properties available in comparison to 2024, majority of these are still out of reach for those on income support!

Statistics are showing that out of 3,523 private rentals (in March 2025):
🔸 A single person receiving JobSeeker could afford 0 properties
🔸 A person on the Age Pension could afford 7 properties
🔸 A single person on minimum wage could afford 14 properties

Western Australians need access to both affordable AND appropriate homes to ensure we can combat the ongoing rental affordability crisis. A joint effort from the Commonwealth and State governments, we can work towards long-lasting solutions. 🤝

Last week, some of our team members visited Mission Australia's Youth Accommodation Support Service (aka the YASS) as a part of YHAC's Service Review program!

YHAC partners with local organisations to understand how their services work with young people experiencing homelessness, giving honest, experience-based feedback on how they can better support young people 📣

Led by young people with lived experiences of homelessness and housing insecurity, YHAC's Service Reviews give unique insights to help services better support young people. Improving young people’s experiences with these services is super important to prevent future experiences of homelessness 💜

Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day!
It’s a day to raise awareness about youth homelessness and ensure the issues and realities of young people experiencing and at risk of homelessness remain high on the public agenda.
To mark the day, here's Part 1 of ‘You Can’t Ask That’, in which the Youth Homelessness Advisory Council unpack the questions you shouldn’t be asking people experiencing homelessness. Part 2 is coming this afternoon. 👀
Today and every day, we’re calling on national and state governments to make ending youth homelessness a national priority by developing a targeted plan and funding the services needed to achieve this objective.
