👏 Congratulations to respected Pilbara community leader Henry Lockyer on his appointment as the first Community Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee (AJAC).

Mr Lockyer is a Banyjima man who brings extensive experience in community consultation, Aboriginal community-controlled service delivery, governance and culturally-informed engagement.

As Co-Chairs of AJAC, Mr Lockyer and Department Director General Kylie Maj will lead the Committee in supporting Attorney General and Corrective Services Minister Dr. Tony Buti MLA on Aboriginal justice policy, priorities and outcomes.

Mr Lockyer said he was honoured to take on the role.

Meet Dan, WA Prison Officer

Dan is a Dad who enjoys going to the gym.

He also contributes to community safety every day, through his work as a Prison Officer.

Dan is one of several serving WA Prisons Officers who, alongside their colleagues, feature in our ‘Bring All You Are’ recruitment campaign.

The ads, filmed at Casuarina Prison, show how life and employment skills from a range of backgrounds are valued as a Prison Officer.
For instance, Dan used to work FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) in the mining industry, which requires discipline and resilience.

Now Dan generally works a 10-in-21-day roster as a Prison Officer and enjoys a similar lifestyle, but with more time at home.

How amazing do our Department of Justice staff look wearing all shades of purple? 👏

Wear It Purple Day is an annual event to support and empower LGBTQIA+ young people, allies and communities.

This year’s theme ‘Colours of Courage’ recognises that bravery is expressed in many different ways. It can be seen in everyday actions such as standing alongside others, seeking support, speaking up, and living openly and authentically.

Our statement is clear - today and every day, we’re creating supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for everyone.

Shaping more than clay 🙂
Art and new beginnings

What starts as a lump of clay can become something far more powerful.

Working alongside an artist who regularly exhibits at Sculpture by the Sea, women at Boronia Pre-release Centre used clay as a medium for creativity, self-expression and personal growth in a unique therapeutic workshop.

The session was part of the Lotterywest Access and Inclusion Program, which helps bring the arts to communities which might not otherwise have access to it. The program is incorporated into Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, the annual international sculpture exhibition staged at Cottesloe Beach.

Prison praise 👏👏👏

A decade of dedication celebrated in Goldfields

Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison recently opened its gates to almost 100 community partners and staff - past and present - to celebrate 10 years since the state-of-the-art facility opened.

The prison, built in the heart of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Vivian Street, received its first intake of prisoners in August 2016. It replaced a smaller, ageing prison previously operating on the outskirts of the City.

Representatives from Western Australia Police Force and the Mayor of Kalgoorlie-Boulder were among special guests in attendance.

Hear their thoughts on the prison’s positive impact locally, as well as a heartfelt thank you to staff - for their professionalism and ongoing commitment to community safety.

It's not every day you're encouraged to cause trouble at work.

But that's exactly what a group of staff did when they donned women’s prison clothing and stepped into the role of prisoners for an essential riot response exercise at Bandyup Women’s Prison.

The training scenario involved the women barricading themselves inside a building, creating a realistic environment to test the response of the prison’s officers and senior management team to a major disturbance.

Exercises like this help ensure staff are prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations and maintain safety and security.

34 recently graduated Prison Officers are now part of the growing Corrective Services team supporting the rehabilitation of people in care across WA.

“Our towards 1,200 plan is well in motion,” Acting Corrective Services Commissioner Rick Curtis said. “This cohort makes 149 graduates for the calendar year which is outstanding.”

The new recruits bring skills and experience from a diverse range of backgrounds, but the most important qualification is the desire to help other people – and the community.

“The skills and attributes we’re after, are just a good person – we’ll give you the rest,” Act. Comm. Curtis said.

Graduate Prison Officer Siobhan, a former barista with her sights set on the Drug Detection Unit (DDU), agreed.

“You learn everything at the Academy, they’re so supportive and teach you everything you need to know from start to finish,” she said.

“Because we are such a diverse team, everyone brings something different,” Graduate Prison Officer Tynelle, a former London Chef, with Royal Navy experience added. “What you have someone else might not, and that’s what you bring to the table.”

Meet the Emus!

The Emergency Management Unit is gearing up to take on the lawn bowls competition at the World Police & Fire Games 2027 Perth.

Led by Director Ben Stark, the team is already hitting the green to prepare for the Games, which will run from 12 – 21 March 2027 in Perth.

The Games will bring together 8,600 law enforcement, correctional, fire and emergency services athletes from 70 countries, competing across 65 sports in a celebration of service, teamwork and global camaraderie.

Representing Corrective Services on the world stage, Ben and his team are proud to compete alongside fellow emergency services personnel from around the globe.

“The World Police and Fire Games is a unique opportunity to meet sports lovers from across the world, share stories and make connections while competing in a fabulous event,” Ben said.
