The construction sector represents the largest sector of small businesses in Western Australia, at around 17 per cent.

The SBDC recently attended the Tradie Expo at the invitation of the Construction Training Fund, to engage directly with tradies, contractors and small business owners from across Western Australia.

Our team spoke with expo-goers about the SBDC's advisory services covering business planning, marketing, cash flow management, employment obligations, regulatory requirements and more. We also shared information about our workshops and resources designed to support both current and aspiring business owners in the trades sector.

A key focus for our team was raising awareness of the new SBDC Building Industry Business Hotline (1300 831 185) and the support available to sole traders and small construction-related businesses navigating the challenges of running and growing a business.

Deciding to raise your prices can be a big step for your business. The next crucial step is to make sure your customers know what’s changing, why and when your new pricing takes effect.

If you’ve decided it’s the right time to increase your prices, it’s important to invest time in planning how to share the news of your new pricing.

Family owned and working across Western Australia, Dane Cocliff’s business I2R Modular focuses on bringing ideas to life.

Success has come in a short space of time for Dane, who opened the doors to his business in 2023. During this time, Dane has learnt from some of the best – who also happened to be conveniently close to him!

“My family has run small businesses in the mining and drilling space before, so I learned early on what it takes to start and grow something.” Dane said.

“In my previous role I was a project engineer on large commercial projects, giving me technical grounding for modular construction.”

With his entrepreneurial genes and spirit, Dane knew it was time to put his skills to the test.

Paying by card is a popular and convenient way to buy goods and services. At the moment, businesses can charge a surcharge or merchant fee for payments made by card, but this is set to change.

Applications for the Small and Medium Business Recovery Support Program are now open.

The program is open to eligible small and medium sized businesses located or operating in one or more of the four local government areas impacted by Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle and the associated flooding.

Grants up to a maximum of $20,000 are available to assist with costs of eligible activities.

The two categories of grant assistance available are:

Small and Medium Business Recovery Support Program

The WA Government has activated the Business Recovery Support Program to help business owners impacted by Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

The Program provides grants up to a maximum of $20,000 to eligible small and medium businesses to assist with costs of eligible activities.

There are two categories of grant assistance available:
🔹Economic loss – Available to businesses in the local government area of Exmouth ONLY
🔹Business support grants for clean-up, repairs and reinstatement

At the SBDC, we want to make sure all our communications are an authentic representation of WA’s amazing small business community and our customers. For this reason, we are often looking for real small business owners who have used SBDC advisory, online resources, skills development workshops, dispute resolution service or other services to participate in a photo shoot to create new photos and short videos to use across SBDC marketing, including our website.

If you are a small business owner located in WA and are willing to feature in a photoshoot and video content for the SBDC’s use, we’d love to hear from you. As thanks for your participation, we will provide a couple of professional photos from your shoot for you to use in your own marketing.
