We, in the United for Iran (Australia) group, are deeply concerned about the escalating impacts of the US-Israel war with the Islamic Republic of Iran on innocent civilians and critical civilian infrastructure.
President Trump’s recent threat to attack Iran’s power plants adds to our concerns regarding the unintended consequences of the war, which we consider unethical and in violation of international laws of war.
While we recognise the repeated violations by the Islamic Republic of Iran of international norms—including attacks on civilians and disregard for humanitarian protections—such wrongful behaviour should not undermine the commitment of democratic countries to international law.
Under international law, targeting civilian infrastructure essential to civilian survival (such as water, electricity, food, medical facilities, and other vital civilian infrastructure) is prohibited unless it is being used for direct military purposes.
These obligations are not optional; they are binding under customary international law and are reinforced by United Nations Security Council resolutions that emphasise accountability for violations. By prioritising these laws, the United States and Israel can neutralise the actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran without breaching their own ethical and legal commitments.
