Palmerston Association provides support and counselling services to individuals and families in WA that are facing issues with alcohol and drug use.

Serving the community for 40 years, Palmerston provides an important service that supports individuals and families in Western Australia that are facing issues with alcohol and drug use. Palmerston operate from a number of locations offering free counselling to families and individuals with offices in Perth, Fremantle, Rockingham, Mandurah, Thornlie, Albany and Katanning. Palmerston also provide s

ervices in Denmark, Mt Barker, Walpole and other outlying towns. Palmerston operate a Therapeutic Community (TC) 35kms south of Perth. Palmerston Farm offers a residential rehabilitation program designed for people wishing to address their substance use issues. The 10 acre semi-rural property is located 30 minutes south of Perth and offers 29 residential places for men and women and further transitional housing for three graduates of the program. A Therapeutic Community (TC) is a supportive residential environment where residents are encouraged to create positive changes in their lives and to develop new life and coping skills. The TC Model facilitates personal growth within a community of concerned people working together to help themselves and one another. Residents in a Therapeutic Community play a significant role in the day to day operation of the community and in supporting each other.

Thank you to the WA Labor Members of Parliament who visited Palmerston Farm today Hugh Jones MLA, Magenta Marshall, Hon Klara Andric and Hon. Andy O’Donnell.

It was a valuable opportunity to showcase how our therapeutic community operates and to share the impact of our work. Members heard firsthand from current residents and staff who have transitioned from lived experience into peer support worker roles, highlighting the power of recovery, connection and community.

It was also great to yarn with members and hear about their personal connections to this work. Hearing from Hugh about his previous role in the Navy as a counsellor, and from Magenta about the positive impact Palmerston’s outreach services in Rockingham have had for people in her electorate, reinforced the importance of ensuring accessible support for those seeking recovery.

We appreciate the time taken to learn more about the important role Palmerston plays in supporting people on their recovery journey.

We’re hiring: Counsellor/Educator – Prison Pathways (Part-time)

Palmerston is looking for a compassionate and skilled Counsellor/Educator to join our Pathways Program at Albany Prison. This role focuses on supporting individuals in alcohol and other drug treatment, providing counselling, facilitating group programs, and contributing to positive post-custody outcomes.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you’ll play a key role in delivering culturally secure care and supporting participants through meaningful change.

We’re looking for someone with strong counselling skills, relevant qualifications, and a genuine commitment to compassion, connection and respect.

📣 Palmerston Welcomes New General Manager, Service Delivery – Community

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Gayle Knight as Palmerston’s new General Manager, Service Delivery – Community.

Gayle brings extensive leadership experience across the Justice, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), Mental Health, Housing and Community Services sectors. Her passion for supporting individuals, families and communities aligns strongly with Palmerston’s vision of creating healthier communities and positive futures. Gayle will provide strategic leadership to our Community AOD services and Connect Wanju program, supporting our dedicated teams to deliver high-quality, person-centred services across Western Australia.

We look forward to the knowledge, experience and leadership she will bring as we continue to strengthen support for people experiencing alcohol and other drug, mental health and social challenges.

Yesterday marked the final day of National Reconciliation Week, with this year’s theme of ‘All In’ calling on all Australians to reflect on our shared history, recognise the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and commit to the long journey toward genuine reconciliation.

The week included National Sorry Day, a time to acknowledge the profound and ongoing impact of the Stolen Generations and to listen, learn and walk alongside First Nations people in truth-telling and healing.

Palmerston participated in events accross Western Australia. Including the launch of the Great Southern - place based Reconciliation Action Plan.

We still have a long way to go, and reconciliation requires sustained effort, courage and collective action.

Palmerston CEO Emma Jarvis was also at the conference supporting and representing the important work happening across WA.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we pause to acknowledge the strength of the Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on the continued journey toward healing and reconciliation.

We recognise the deep pain and trauma caused by past government policies and the ongoing impact these have on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families, and communities.

At Palmerston, we understand the importance of listening deeply, walking respectfully alongside First Nations people, and continuing to build relationships grounded in trust, respect and connection.

We are reminded of the words often shared by Uncle Charlie Kickett — that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listening to lived experience, culture and community is where understanding begins.

Today, and every day, we remain committed to creating culturally safe spaces where people feel seen, heard and valued.

🌿 We’re hiring: Diversion Officer | Part-Time in Mandurah

Palmerston Association is seeking a Diversion Officer to assess and support individuals appearing before the court who are experiencing alcohol and other drug-related issues. You’ll conduct assessments, facilitate referrals into eligible diversion programs, and build strong working relationships with key court stakeholders, including magistrates, legal professionals, and Community Justice Services.

What we’re looking for:
- Relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent) in social, behavioural or health sciences
- Strong assessment and counselling skills
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team
- Knowledge of AOD issues and co-occurring conditions
- Clear written and verbal communication skills

Staff Dylan and Zoe represented Palmerston at the Community Open Day celebrating the opening of the new Moorditj Koort Aboriginal Corporation office in Armadale.

It was a wonderful celebration of community, culture and connection, alongside the launch of the new GP service supporting culturally safe healthcare for the Armadale community.
