SOWFI Board members; Wildlife Finishing School property manager and Head of Habitat for Nature Lynda Demaagd, ecologist Shelley Greer, and Marian Maclucas, meet Peter Garrett at the State Landcare Awards.
We were a finalist in the Community Partnerships category, recognising the partnerships we’ve built with veterinary clinics, councils and other environmental groups to create and restore habitat for wildlife.
Combined with our educational initiatives, this work takes our message to schools, getting older students out of the classroom and into nature through habitat projects, and teaching primary students valuable lessons on who to call if they need help with wildlife and how to create a wildlife friendly backyard.
Although we didn't win, we’re proud of the connections we’ve made and what we’ve been able to achieve together.

Feed me. Every 20 minutes.
I demand it.
Spring is baby season.
This little tree martin fell out of their nest at the top of a power pole in Scott Creek. That's a long way to fall. And it was too difficult to get them back up.
Luckily, they were uninjured and an experienced bird carer was able to take them in.
Tree martins typically head north to warmer parts of Australia for winter, returning south in spring to breed.

Who lives in a hollow? Who nests in a hollow?
A possum. A parrot. An owl.
When this tree came down, it displaced a family of sulphur crested cockatoos.
Now with Monica, these babies will be raised with the support of knowledge sharing between our carers and our friends at WWO.

But the cost of caring for these displaced babies? That falls on volunteers.
Did you know that developers pay compensation to government for cutting down trees? Couldn't some of that money go towards the wildlife that loses its home?

Hey, it's the fun police here....
But please think of them. Their beaks, toes and claws get caught in netting.
Feathers and wings get stuck or covered in sticky stuff that can make it difficult to fly.
Rather than buying brittle plastic and sticky webs from the shops, get creative recycling old sheets, paper and cardboard.
Reach out to neighbours for supplies.
Save some money. Save wildlife.
Here's some ideas:
Make a template from newspaper. Transfer the design to recycled shopping bags or thin cardboard. Paint them black. And stick them to the window with a bit of gaffer tape.
Use sticks lying under your tree to make a broom.
Try displaying: Pumpkins. Decorations on windows. Broomsticks. Ghouls using an old sheet.
What do you think?

What could you make?

Meet the neighbours.
Koala mum and her joey watched as SOWFI's Sharon put up a release box.
Meet Clover the brushtail.

Enjoy your new neighbourhood.

Turnip and their unusual coat.
Turnip was picked up from the vet by one of our local carers, staying overnight in safety before starting the journey to an advanced carer.
Feeding well, Turnip then moved on to their next carer, who would take them through to release.
But there was something a little unusual about Turnip.
Their fur was growing “strangely”.
By the time they were ready for the aviary, they had grown a beautiful, thick coat.
From being found in their deceased mum’s pouch as a tiny, furless pinkie to release.
A little wildlife journey involving teamwork, travel and care.

"An estimated 360,000 South Australians throw a line in annually, making it one of the largest recreational pursuits in the state."
"Generating an estimated $1bn annually, including $403m in tourism."
(Department of Premier and Cabinet media release 05.10.2026)

Wildlife rescue teams attend to wildlife tangled in fishing line and snagged by hooks.
If you're one of the 360,000 anglers, please dispose of your hooks, line and sinkers responsibly.

Think about where they can end up. The injuries they can cause. The wildlife left to suffer. And the volunteers who rescue and rehabilitate them. For $0.
Support your local rescue.

🐢🪿And if you happen to catch a bird or a turtle: Don't cut the line.
Take them to a vet to get the line and hook removed safely.
