WA’s finest showcase their skills in Shanghai 🏆✨

Congratulations to our WA Skillaroos, who showcased their skills on the world stage at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai.

Among the medal winners was North Metropolitan TAFE student Lachlan Basc, who secured a silver medal and was named Best of Nation in 3D Digital Game Art.
Jason Seiler also delivered an outstanding result, earning a Medal of Excellence in Bricklaying.

Fellow WA Skillaroo Larni Roberts (South Metropolitan TAFE) and Daniel Peto (North Metropolitan TAFE) proudly represented Western Australia, demonstrating their skills alongside the world’s best competitors.

Congratulations to all four competitors on their outstanding achievements 👏

Turn your Australian Defence Force service into a new career in the defence industry🔧

Applications are now open for the State Government’s Defence Industry Veterans Employment Scheme (DIVES) scholarship program.

The scholarship provides up to $5,000 to help Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans and current members planning to separate within the next six months, to pivot to a new career in WA’s defence industry.

The scholarship will help with the cost of course fees and other expenses associated with vocational training or university qualifications, enabling ADF veterans to build on their existing skills and gain new qualifications aligned with the defence industry.

Whether you’re looking to upskill, cross-skill or explore a new career pathway, the program supports ADF veterans to take the next step towards securing rewarding opportunities WA’s defence industry.

This week is WA Mental Health Week.🌤️🧠

The week provides an opportunity to spark meaningful conversations, break down the stigma surrounding mental health challenges and raise awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing.

This year's theme, Taking control in the face of change, focuses on personal agency, building resilience, and fostering optimism when faced with life's challenges and uncertainties.

Our Department continues to foster an environment where staff feel empowered to seek support, make positive lifestyle choices and build their knowledge of mental health through the Thrive at DTWD program.

From participating in Mental Health First Aid training, accessing general health checks provided by TAFE student nurses, supporting help seeking through our range of employee support programs, to staying active through activities such as tai chi, the Department encourages everyone to prioritise their wellbeing and seek support in ways that work best for them.

Colours of Courage on display 🌈💜

In August, the Department’s Diverse Sexualities and Genders Committee and Young Professionals Program Committee joined forces to organise a morning quiz for Wear It Purple Day 2026.

The quiz saw teams battle it out across three rounds while learning about the many forms of courage shown by LGBTIQA+SB young people, allies and communities who continue to create change, live authentically and encourage everyone to feel safe being themselves.

Through friendly competition and shared learning, the quiz reflected this year’s Wear It Purple Day theme, Colours of Courage, while highlighting our ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and belonging across the Department.
