G’day dhu crew - due to the recent demersal management changes, we’ve made the decision to take a step back for a while, regroup and decide on where we go in the future.

There’s still a big role for all of us to play in ensuring there's Dhufish Forever.

Thanks for your fantastic support and for caring about the fish as much as we do 💙🤍

Have a great festive season and we’ll see you again soon!

🤔How do you know if a fish has barotrauma?

The obvious signs are bulging eyes, swollen abdomens or a stomach pushed out of the mouth.

But barotrauma can also cause hidden internal injuries like:
👉Blood clots
👉Haemorrhaging
👉Organ damage

These can kill a fish in minutes, hours or even days after release 😵 especially from deeper water.

That’s why if you catch a demersal from deeper water, it’s better to keep it as part of your bag limit rather than risk wasting a fish that may not survive 🤝

That’s also why we stop fishing for demersals once we’ve got what we need.

Demersals generally don't release well, so for us, catch and release sport fishing for them is not OK 🙅‍♂

Sharks love an easy feed 🦈 but every fish taken is another fish lost from the stock.

If the sharks move in, 🔁change your spot or switch species.

Fishing through the sharks only makes things worse for our stocks and for us.

The Perth 4WD and Adventure Show was hot 🥵 but not as hot as the WA community's support for strong stewardship of our demersals 🔥😍

We had a stack of great convos 🤝 sharing ideas on the little things we can do to make a difference.

🎁 Our epic $1.5K prize pack found a home with lucky winner Matt Parker, who is now fully equipped to mix up, look after and make the most of his catch 👑

A huge thanks to everyone who dropped by our stand and showed their support - it's clear we're a community that truly cares for our demersals 💪🫶

We've got another massive giveaway (worth $1.5K 🤑) of awesome fishing gear to help look after our demersals. On top of that, we've got stacks of free stickers, some stubby holders and plenty of ideas to share around good fishing practices for our demersals 🤝

💗🐟How good is this?

Pink snapper are spawning UNDISTURBED in Cockburn Sound – helping to replenish the stock for the future! 👏

Supported by fishers, these fish are now protected by spawning closures that have been expanded in recent years as science revealed more about where and when they spawn.

It’s a fantastic example of WA fishers showing good stewardship to look after the fish we love — exactly what we’re all about at Dhufish Forever. 💪🎣

Do release weights really work?

✅ Absolutely — they can still help demersal fish affected by barotrauma get safely back to the ocean floor by quickly recompressing them.

While some fish may still suffer unseen internal injuries (like burst swim bladders or blood clots) that can cause delayed death, it’s on us as responsible fishers to give the demersals that we need to release the best chance of survival.

Remember - signs of barotrauma aren’t always obvious 👀 That’s why we keep all the demersals we catch in deeper water. But if you’re in shallower water and choose to release them, always use a release weight - it’s simple, effective and can help protect our demersals for the future. 💙🐟

Demersals are special 💎 but they’re not the only game in town!

Mixing up your catch keeps fishing fun, builds skills and helps take pressure off our demersals🔀

Next time you're out, why not try:
🍣Tuna
💪Seriolas – kingies and sambos
🍽Whiting
🦑Squid

It's up to us to teach our kids to expand their fishing horizons and set an example for future generations⚓

Cheers to everyone who popped by the Dhufish Forever stand at the 2025 Perth Boat Show!

We had countless great convos with passionate fishos just like us, and it’s clear that stewardship of our demersal fish runs strong in the WA fishing community 💪

We also had a very deserving winner of our mega boat show prize pack 🤩 congrats Klaus Lochmuller, no doubt everything in that bundle will be put to good use!

Everyone’s heard it before 🗣"limit your catch, don’t catch your limit”

One good demersal makes a trip, so do we really need to chase a bag out?
🍽 Only take what you need
🙅Don’t “high grade” (throw back a smaller fish for a bigger one)
✋Stop targeting demersals once you’ve got enough
😍 Mix your catch up with a tasty feed of pelagics, flatties, whiting or squid

Let’s fish smarter, not harder 🤝 for the future of our fishery 📈
