A major step forward for mental health care in our community 💜

Minister for Health Infrastructure John Carey, Minister for Health and Mental Health Meredith Hammat, and Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk have today announced the practical completion of Fremantle Hospital’s new 40‑bed mental health facility, with services set to open from late July.

The purpose‑built space expands access to specialist care and includes WA's first 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Centre, providing a safe and dedicated alternative to emergency departments, along with new services for older adults and people with complex needs.

Designed to support earlier intervention and better patient experience, these new services will help more people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Today is ‘What Matters to You?’ Day – a movement all about connecting staff, patients, their families and carers.

Instead of asking ‘what’s the matter with you?’, we want to know ‘what matters to you?’, so that we can make you feel supported and respected. We want to know what’s important to you and any goals or healthcare preferences you have so we can provide personalised care. This might look like:

💬 ‘I would like my partner to be here when the doctors see me’
💬 ‘I prefer to shower in the evenings’
💬 ‘I need a Halal meal’
💬 ‘I prefer to go by my nickname’

Although your treating team may not be able to address everything you share, it is important to have these conversations with them so they can support you as much as possible.

Today Rockingham General Hospital celebrated its 50th birthday.

Two Ministers, one Mayor, one Chief Executive and a host of staff and volunteers - past and present were on hand to tuck into the birthday cake and share stories 🎂

The hospital prides itself on being a community hospital in the truest sense.

“We are family,” said Rockingham Peel Group Executive Director Dr Asheila Narang 🫶

A big shout out goes to Moya Parker, a staff member, who has been working at the hospital since day one.

She is one of the thousands of staff who have ensured Rockingham General Hospital is a place that is here for people in the moments that matter most

If you’re onsite at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) with your kids, they can now get the FluMist nasal spray – a free, needle-free flu vaccine 🤧

It’s a safe and effective way to protect against this year’s influenza A and B strains, without the distress of a needle.

Your child doesn’t need to be a patient. If they’re aged 2 to 11 years, just walk into the community vaccination clinic on the main concourse at FSH, 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday 🏥

Today is National Sorry Day – a time to reflect, acknowledge truth, and recognise the ongoing impact of past policies on Aboriginal people.

At South Metro Health Service, we’re committed to turning sorry into action by embedding culturally safe, respectful care in everything we do, and supporting better health outcomes through strong partnerships with our Aboriginal community and workforce.

With National Reconciliation Week beginning tomorrow we encourage you to acknowledge our Aboriginal patients and colleagues, and to reflect, learn and engage.

Together, we can turn sorry into action.

Training program complete ✅

Our first cohort of registrars have just finished their dedicated two-year training program to become endorsed clinical psychologists or clinical neuropsychologists.

The State’s first coordinated clinical psychology and neuropsychology registrar program provides early career clinicians with a cohesive training environment and supported pathway into complex tertiary health roles.

Seeing the need for a formalised registrar program at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals, a structured registrar program was developed to attract early career clinicians to tertiary health and give psychologists access to specialised training required for hospital-based roles across a broad range of clinical settings.

With 13 registrars successfully progressing through the current program, the initiative has been well received by trainees completing their qualifications, with growing interest for new positions.

Hear from some of the trainees and read more about the program here 👉 https://www.fsfhg.health.wa.gov.au/News/2026/05/11/First-cohort-of-clinical-psychologists-complete-dedicated-registrar-program
