Dwellingup showed us exactly what it means to be a Trail Town 👏 On Monday, local businesses and community members hit ‘The Mack’ trail to experience Dwellingup through a trail visitor’s eyes and explore how trails connect people to place, stories and local businesses.

From trail-side conversations with guest speakers to an interactive workshop, the day was all about understanding the full trail experience.... “Seeing our local trails through a visitor’s eyes is so valuable. It’s about sharing what we know creating a better experience for everyone."

A huge thanks to everyone who joined us and to the Shire of Murray for partnering on the day. Special thanks to the support from WA Government for the grant funding provided to the Shire.

Bravo Dwellingup for continuing to lead the way as a WA Trail Town 💚

⛰ Looking for a challenging hike with seriously rewarding views? The Devils Slide Walk in Porongurup National Park is one to add to your bucket list.

Rising to the highest peak in the Porongurup Range (670m), the Devils Slide Walk is a 5km return, Grade 4 trail that will test your legs—but reward you with sweeping views across the granite domes, the Stirling Range to the north and even glimpses of the southern coastline on a clear day.

Starting from the Karri boya-k (Tree in the Rock) picnic area, the trail takes around 2–3 hours to complete, with some steep, rocky sections along the way—so it’s best suited to experienced bushwalkers with a good level of fitness 🥾

🌳 Along the journey, you’ll pass through one of WA’s richest biodiversity hotspots, home to over 700 plant species and a variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for honey possums, brushtail wallabies and rare birdlife like Baudin’s cockatoo.

There are a few route options to mix things up too: return the same way via Wansbrough Walk, or extend your adventure via Nancy Peak and Hayward Peak for even more epic lookout moments. After your hike, enjoy a well-earned break back at the picnic area - perfect for making a full day of it in this stunning national park.

💚 Looking for a peaceful riverside walk with a touch of history? The Heritage Trail at Roley Pools in Roleystone is a hidden gem in the Perth Hills that’s perfect for a relaxed nature escape.

🚶Following the banks of the Djarlgarro Beelier (Canning River), this 3.2km return trail is an easy Class 2, making it great for a casual stroll with family and friends. Starting from Thompson Road, the trail winds through a stunning valley of granite outcrops, small waterfalls and flowing river pools, including the iconic Roley Pool—once a popular swimming spot for locals dating back to the early 1900s.

🌳 As you walk, you’ll pass through beautiful bushland filled with Marri, Wandoo and Flooded Gum trees, while the river corridor is alive with wildlife—keep an eye out for quenda, rakali (native water rats), black cockatoos and plenty of birdlife along the way.

The trail features clear signage, some gentle hills, uneven natural terrain and stair access to river viewpoints. It’s also dog-friendly (on lead) and can be extended by linking with nearby trails like the Boardwalk Track for a longer adventure. With upgraded signage sharing stories of Noongar culture and landcare, this walk is not just scenic—it’s a chance to connect with the history and natural beauty of the area.

The Hippo’s Yawn Trail at Wave Rock near Hyden is a must-do when exploring WA’s Wheatbelt. This easy, 1.7km loop trail leads you to a unique and quirky granite formation that looks just like a yawning hippo – and it’s just as impressive up close! 🦛

Hippo’s Yawn is a striking granite tor that was once part of the larger rock formation, now weathered over millions of years into a cave-like shape resembling a yawning hippo. The “mouth” rises around 13 metres high, showcasing the incredible natural processes that have shaped this ancient landscape.

The walk winds through native bush, with sections of casuarina trees and sweeping granite outcrops. Autumn and winter bring a quieter kind of beauty to the trail 🌿 Keep an eye out for delicate ground orchids, including greenhoods and spider orchids, along with other seasonal wildflowers beginning to emerge.

With picnic areas, a visitor centre and camping facilities nearby, it’s easy to turn your visit into a great day out in the Wheatbelt. Don’t forget your camera – this is one rock formation you won’t see anywhere else! 📸

Golden orb-weavers: beautiful from a distance, deeply unnecessary at face height.
If you’ve been out on WA trails lately, chances are you’ve spotted their handiwork... or accidentally become part of it. Orb weaver spiders build large wheel-shaped webs, and those threads can look yellow, cream or even golden when the sunlight hits just right.
They’re impressive little engineers too. Spider silk is incredibly strong and flexible for its weight, which helps the web absorb the impact of flying insects.
If you spot the spider in the middle, the larger one is usually the female. The males are tiny by comparison and often much harder to notice.
The good news: despite the dramatic setup, golden orb-weavers are not aggressive and are considered harmless to humans, though a bite can still be painful and may cause mild local symptoms.
And while there are plenty still around right now, the big females are usually nearing the end of their season come winter.
So whether you’re walking, riding or running, take a second to look up next time you’re on the trail.
Or don’t, and enjoy this classic WA rite of passage.

Have you spotted one lately? 🕸️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕸️
