The Burmese Association of Western Australia

The Burmese Association of Western Australia Focusing on charitable fundraising activities in support of the orphanages which we sponsor in Myanmar and social activities for members and seniors.

The Burmese Association of WA (BAWA) is the oldest and largest Burmese community organisation in Western Australia. It was formed in 1965 and incorporated in 1969 to assist new migrants and refugees who had arrived from Burma. The main focus of the Association is to conduct charitable fundraising activities in support of the orphanages which we sponsor in Myanmar. Our strategy here is to enable an

d empower these establishments to become self-sufficient, rather than the simple provision of a cash donation which in most cases would result only in a short term gain. Accordingly; we have provided funds and achieved success in establishing livestock, poultry and agricultural farming projects which remain viable and productive. We have also established sewing skills training through the provision of resources which has resulted in the graduation of qualified seamstresses. Our charitable activities are not limited to Myanmar as we have also donated to worthy causes here in Australia as well as other countries. The BAWA is extremely active in the area of senior’s activities and interests. We hold get-togethers and luncheons every month, together with regular outings which include extended trips away within the state. We have a dedicated senior’s support group which manages all matters associated with senior’s interests. Social functions such as dances are regular events throughout the year; the mainstays being New Year’s Eve and the annual Anniversary. In addition to these we usually have one or two more dance/social events as well as dedicated Country Hoedowns. Food is a very important element in the Myanmar culture; hence we hold a monthly food fete at our premises. These fetes are very popular and attract a very large number of repeat and new patrons who come along to enjoy an extensive variety of Myanmar cuisine while taking the opportunity to catch up with old friends or to meet others with common interests.
