Come along and meet the team behind the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade!

A community information session is your chance to:

• Chat with the construction, traffic and community teams
• Check out the latest concept designs
• Ask questions about upcoming works

At this session, there will be a specific focus on upcoming traffic management arrangements in the northern section of the project, including Abernethy Road and the Thomas Road intersection upgrades.

Since Orton Road closed in late June, the project team has been working hard to progress the new Orton Road connection to Timbrel Road.

Works to date have included placing embankment fill, subgrade material and basecourse, along with the installation of drainage, all key steps towards completing the new connection.

Following completion of the pavement layers, prime and seal works are scheduled to commence in September, alongside kerbing, footpaths and barrier works.

The final stage will see permanent asphalt laid along the new road alignment before the reopening scheduled in mid-October, helping to support future traffic movements throughout construction of this new intersection.

Thank you to the community for your patience as we continue to progress these important works.

The first bridge footing for the new Thomas Road bridge over Tonkin Highway has now been poured.

This footing will support six pier columns, which will form part of the structure supporting the new bridge above Tonkin Highway.

In total, five footings will be constructed for the bridge. Three footings will support six pier columns each, while the remaining two footings will support the bridge’s abutment walls.

It’s an exciting step forward as the Thomas Road Interchange continues to take shape!

Construction progress is powering ahead on Thomas Road, with the new transmission line poles now being installed by Western Power.

These new poles will support the transmission lines which are being realigned to help make way for the duplication of Thomas Road.

It’s another important step forward as work continues to deliver this major upgrade for the community.

Sustainability in action!

A key focus of our project is finding smarter ways to reuse materials and reduce the need for raw material to be brought to site.

Recently, the team has begun repurposing old railway ballast as embankment fill, giving existing materials a second life while reducing the demand for new resources.

By embracing innovative reuse opportunities in ways that still meet our strict construction standards, we’re helping to lower our environmental impact and build a more sustainable future.

As construction of the new eastbound lanes on Thomas Road continues between Kargotich Road and Tonkin Highway, median modification works at the Thomas Road and Kargotich Road roundabout are now underway to support upcoming traffic changes.

To safely complete these works, single-lane closures are required at the roundabout. Intermittent night works will also be required between 7pm and 5am, with the modification works expected to be completed in early-September 2026.

Following these works, traffic will be switched onto the westbound lanes, allowing traffic to continue along Thomas Road during permanent construction of the eastbound lanes.

Please allow extra travel time, follow all traffic management in place, and take care when travelling through the area.

From Friday 31 July 2026, the existing stop signs on Abernethy Road will be removed and relocated to Timbrel Road (formerly Hopkinson Road). This change will provide vehicles travelling along Abernethy Road with priority at the intersection, with road users on Timbrel Road being required to stop before turning onto Abernethy Road.

This change is to assist with vehicle movements, enhance safety for road users and ensure the intersection is better aligned with driver expectations.

Please pay attention and remain aware of the changed traffic conditions in this area.

Out of hours works will take place on Thursday 30 July 2026, between 7pm and 5am. These activities will include the removal and installation of stop signs and line marking.

Traffic management will be in place during these signage modifications with works scheduled at night to minimise disruption and to maintain safety for both the community and workforce.

These works are subject to change and may be rescheduled if required.
