The new South Western Highway and Tonkin Highway intersection is starting to take shape, with kerbing works underway on site.

Concrete is fed into a kerb machine, which forms and lays the kerb in place as it moves along the road alignment.

Once the machine has passed, crews finish the kerb by hand, smoothing the concrete and marking the locations for the joints that will be cut to allow the concrete to move as temperatures change.

The new kerbing is helping define the road layout, bringing the new intersection one step closer to completion.

To maintain traffic flow and to support the construction of the new permanent South Western Highway southbound lanes, all traffic will be shifted onto the new South Western Highway northbound alignment, between Jarrahdale Road and Transit Road in late October 2026.

In preparation for this traffic shift, out of hours works, including line marking and barrier installation, will take place as required until 30 October 2026 between 7pm and 5am.

Following the traffic shift, the new roundabout on South Western Highway will be open to traffic. The future Tonkin Highway connection will remain closed while construction continues. Please follow traffic management signs and directions and take care when travelling through the changed road layout.

The project is working with local Cardup-based business Permacast to deliver a range of precast structures required across the project.

Recently, the project team visited their precast facility to see the process involved in producing these important components including the skilled work involved in pouring the beam structures for the new Orton Road pedestrian bridge. These beams begin as fabricated steel reinforcements, as shown in the first image, which are placed into a mould before concrete is poured to form the finished structure, which can be seen in the second image.

The third image highlights the various components that make up the pedestrian underpasses being installed across the project.

These beams and underpass components will be transported to site as construction progresses.

Working with local businesses like Permacast helps support collaboration with the community while we continue to deliver these critical infrastructure upgrades.

To minimise disruption for the community and to avoid the need for multiple road closures, the Project is working with the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale to coordinate works during a single closure of Abernethy Road, between Kargotich Road and Kardan Boulevard.

During this closure, the Shire will undertake road remediation works on Abernethy Road between Kargotich Road and west of Timbrel Road, while the Project will complete road connection works associated with the Abernethy Road realignment and new roundabout at Timbrel Road.

To safely complete these works, Abernethy Road will be temporarily closed between Kargotich Road and Kardan Boulevard from Monday 19 October 2026 to mid-December 2026, with late-January 2027 as contingency. Timbrel Road will also be closed between Devon Court and north of Stockman Road during these works

To help manage traffic movements, the following changes will be in place:

• Left turn only from Briggs Road onto Thomas Road.
• Traffic calming measures on Kargotich Road, including a temporary mini-roundabout at Orton Road.

Motorists are reminded to take care, follow traffic management signage and directions, and allow extra travel time when travelling through the area.

Orton Road reopens ahead of Abernethy Road closure.

In preparation for the Abernethy Road closure commencing Monday 19 October 2026, Orton Road has reopened west of Timbrel Road on a new temporary alignment.

To further support traffic movements during the closure, the project team is constructing a temporary roundabout at the intersection of Orton Road and Kargotich Road.

Works at this intersection will take place from Monday 12 October to late October 2026 and will include shoulder widening, pavement construction, line marking and bollard installation.

Motorists are reminded to take care, follow traffic management signage and allow extra travel time when travelling through the area due to changed road conditions.

A key part of the new Tonkin Highway bridge over Wright Road is taking shape, with retaining walls now being installed along the bridge approaches.

These reinforced concrete L-shaped walls are poured on site, allowing each section to be built to suit the changing ground levels and alignment of the new bridge approaches. They will also provide a solid foundation for the noise walls that will be installed above.

Constructed through a series of carefully sequenced stages, including installing reinforcement, setting up formwork and pouring concrete, the walls are an important element to support the finished structure.

It was great to see such a strong turnout at our recent Community Information Session, with more than 90 local community members joining us.

The session provided an opportunity to share the latest information about the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade Project, as well as upcoming traffic management changes along Thomas Road and Abernethy Road.

Most importantly, we appreciated hearing directly from the community. The questions, feedback and open conversations on the day are valuable as we continue to progress the project.

To safely complete water blasting, line marking and bollard installation works associated with the upcoming traffic switch, out of hours works are required at the Thomas Road and Kargotich Road roundabout from Monday 5 October 2026 to Wednesday 7 October 2026, between 7pm and 5am.

Following these works, traffic will be shifted onto the westbound lanes at the roundabout, allowing traffic to continue along Thomas Road during permanent construction of the eastbound lanes.

Please allow extra travel time, follow all traffic management in place, and take care when travelling through the area.

The team recently visited the steel fabrication facility to see the piling cages being made for the Tonkin Highway bridge over Wright Road.

These large steel cages will form part of the reinforced concrete piles that will support the bridge piers.

Starting as coils of high-strength reinforcing steel, the material is shaped around steel rods before being rotated and welded together to create the finished cylindrical cages.

An important part of the bridge’s foundations, the piling cages will soon be transported to site as construction progresses.

MSE walls are starting to take shape across the project!

MSE, or Mechanically Stabilised Earth, is an engineered system that combines layers of compacted fill, reinforcement and a wall facing to create strong, stable structures.

Across the project, these walls are helping manage changes in ground level and provide support for roads, ramps and embankments.

The MSE walls pictured will support the Tonkin Highway southbound connection to Thomas Road eastbound.

Another key piece of the project is starting to come together.
