The Linkwest office and many of our member Centres are located on Noongar land, where Makuru season is upon us. Makuru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year in the South West. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

As the waterways and catchments started to fill, people were able to move about their country with ease and their food sources changed from the sea, estuarine and lake foods to those of the land, in particular the grazing animals such as the kangaroo.

As well as a food source, animals provided people with many other things. For example, the 'yongar' or kangaroo, not only provided meat but also 'bookas' (animal skin cloaks that were used as the nights became much cooler). Nothing was left. Even the bones and sinews were used in the manufacturing of bookas and for affixing barbs to hunting tools such as spears.

Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. If you look carefully, you might see pairs of 'wardongs' (ravens) flying together.

Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed.

The National Reconciliation Week 2026 Street Banners are up and looking stunning! Have you seen the YFC sponsored NRW banner?

Hundreds of colourful banners are flying proudly across WA in support of reconciliation. They feature 'Murrunpa', a powerful piece by Melissa Sunfly, a Kukatja/Ngardi artist from Wirrimanu (Balgo), East Kimberley.

As we mark National Reconciliation Week, these banners are a visible reminder that reconciliation is a shared journey; one we must all be part of. This year’s “All In” message calls on each of us to step forward, show up, and play our role in building respectful relationships and a more unified future.

National Reconciliation Week is held annually between two significant dates - the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum on 27 May and the Mabo decision on 3 June. This year we are proud to be members of Reconciliation WA and a sponsor of the Reconciliation WA Street Banner program! Have you seen our banner on the corner of Yangebup and Dunraven/Osprey Roads?

What an inspiring evening attending the Embedding Culture workshop presented by Little Green Steps Western Australia and Belinda Cox from Djirrily Dreaming. The workshop was held at our Centre as a lead up to National Reconciliation Week.
We were privileged to deepen our understanding of Noongar culture and explore meaningful ways to authentically embed Aboriginal perspectives into our early learning environment. The workshop provided valuable insights into culturally responsive practice, relationship-building with Aboriginal children and families, and creating inclusive learning experiences that honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, stories and traditions.
The hands-on experiences, beautiful resources, storytelling and discussions around language, connection to Country and cultural identity were incredibly engaging and thought-provoking. It was wonderful to connect with other educators who are passionate about strengthening reconciliation in early childhood education.
We are leaving feeling inspired, reflective and excited to continue embedding Aboriginal perspectives into our curriculum in meaningful and respectful ways for all children.
A huge thank you to Belinda for sharing her knowledge, experiences and culture with such warmth and generosity. 💛❤️🖤

We had a wonderful night celebrating amazing volunteers at the City of Cockburn Awards Night with an “Under the Sea” theme 🦀🧜‍♀️🪼

We were very honoured to be one of the 91 nominees recognised for an award. Thank you to community member Tara Ormsby for nominating the Centre for Volunteer Organisation of the Year 🙌

In her nomination she said:

“In so many aspects this community centre is a shining light in the community and we should strive to support them and each other to keep such a positive place for people to come and be a part of.”

Thank you Tara 🥰

Congratulations to all recipients and nominees, and thank you to the City of Cockburn for supporting and celebrating volunteers in our community.
