🌏✨ Celebrating National Reconciliation Week at the Y East Cannington ELC! ✨🌏

This week, our little learners have been on a beautiful journey of discovery, connection, and creativity as we honoured National Reconciliation Week! πŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ–€β€οΈ

Here's a peek at what we've been up to:
🏴 The Aboriginal Flag β€” Our children explored the powerful symbolism behind the colours of the Aboriginal flag, then got their hands busy painting rocks in black, red, and yellow. A simple activity with such a meaningful message!

🦜 Birds & Dreaming Stories β€” We were captivated by "How the Birds Got Their Colours", a beautiful Dreaming story from the Bardi people of Broome. Inspired by its magic, the children created stunning bird collages using real feathers β€” each one as unique as the story itself!

πŸͺƒ Dot Painting & Paper Mache β€” Tiny hands got creative with traditional-style dot painting on boomerangs, and we even crafted our very own paper mache sea turtles. The concentration and care our children put into these was just wonderful to see!

🦘 Indigenous Animal Names Through Play β€” Did you know the word "kangaroo" has Indigenous origins? Our children have been learning the Indigenous names of beloved Australian native animals through fun, play-based exploration.

We are so proud of our children for approaching these experiences with open hearts and curious minds.
Reconciliation starts with learning, listening, and growing together β€” and that's exactly what our ELC community did this week. πŸ’›

This National Reconciliation Week, Y WA is making change β€” and we're All In. πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

From 27 May to 3 June, we join Australians across the country in celebrating the cultures, histories, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and recommitting to the ongoing work of reconciliation.

Reconciliation isn't something that happens to us β€” it's something we actively create together. At Y WA, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country across Western Australia and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging.

This week and every week β€” we're taking action. We're making change. We're All In.

At the Y OSHC, professional development isn't an afterthought, it's a commitment. Every month, we invest in our educators because we know that when our team flourishes, so do the children in their care. Hear from Rachel about what that looks like in practice. Big news from our ELC Tambrey family! 🌿 We've been featured in Pilbara News for our brand new playground renovation, and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you.

This space was designed with one thing in mind: giving our children room to explore, imagine, and truly flourish. Watching them make it their own has been the best part.

Proud to see young people from our Yeah, The Boys! Program at the Base @ Belmont Youth Centre taking action through the Keep Australia Beautiful 'Adopt-a-Spot' initiative. 🌱

Each term, the group heads to Tomato Lake for a community clean-up focused on teamwork, leadership, and giving back to the local community. The sessions are designed to be fun and engaging, with a little healthy competition to see which team can collect the most rubbish. πŸ—‘οΈ

Beyond keeping our environment clean, the initiative helps raise awareness about the impact of litter on wildlife, public spaces, and the wider community. It also encourages young people to take pride in their local area while developing responsibility, teamwork, and positive community connections.

The support from the community has been incredible, with many locals stopping to share encouraging words like:
β€œThis is great to see.”
β€œWonderful to see young people working hard to make their community look nice.”

A huge well done to everyone involved for making a positive impact one clean-up at a time. πŸ’š

Today is IDAHOBIT: the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination.

Held every year on 17 May, this day marks the moment in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its Classification of Diseases. We celebrate that milestone while standing in solidarity with the work that still needs to be done.

LGBTQIA+ people continue to face real and serious harm. They are still subjected to conversion therapy practices, and risk exclusion from religious schools, hospitals and other workplaces. Intersex people experience medical procedures against their consent, and trans and gender diverse people cannot access the essential health care they need.

This is exactly why we go rainbow. 🌈

Because every person who walks through our doors deserves to know they are safe, celebrated and that they belong at the Y. No exceptions. When young people see us stand up, show up and speak up, it sends a message that matters.

The Y stands with the LGBTQIA+ community today and every day. βœŠπŸΌπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ
