We provide support and assistance to:

• People who receive aged care services and have a concern about the quality of service

• People who receive aged care services but are finding it difficult to remain independently at home and would like information on what other services may be available to them

• Older people (50 years+ for Aboriginal and 60 years+ for non-Aboriginal) who are victims or potential victims of abuse from family or friends

On the eve of the 2026 Walk for Reconciliation, here’s a blast from the past... some of our Perth and regional team in Goomburrup (Bunbury) taking part in last year’s event. 📸

For 2026, tomorrow’s the big day again at Goomburrup and in Perth, at Kaarta Koomba (Kings Park) in Boorloo (Perth).

The Reconciliation Walk is a powerful community event celebrating culture, connection, and our shared commitment to reconciliation. The day is for everyone – individuals and families, through to schools and the wider community. 💛🖤❤️

First Nations and the non-Indigenous community are encouraged to join in to walk side-by-side to show your commitment and support. If you're taking part on 22 October, enjoy the day and see you there!

Are life’s tasks like renewing your driver's licence and car registration online a bit of a challenge? 🚗

If you need a confidence boost and tips for accessing the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure's (DTMI) services info on their DoT website, help is at hand.

They are offering *free* two-hour sessions for Perth-based senior citizens groups to assist with navigating their website. 🎉

They’ll step you through the online process and answer questions on the day, sharing great things to know and learn to replace the trek to a licensing centre when that renewal notice turns up!

Today is the International Day of Older Persons… a topic very close to our hearts! 💜

This year’s United Nations theme is: ‘The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives’.

What does it mean? People are living longer, but not always healthier. Society needs to improve healthcare, work, housing and support so older people can live well, independently and fairly.

We recently conducted the Seniors Budget-wise Survey and the results in a nutshell are: rising costs associated with food, utilities, healthcare, and everyday living expenses still putting big pressure on household budgets.

What assistance would make the greatest difference?

Respondents overwhelmingly identified support with:
🔹energy and utility bills as the highest priority (43%)
🔹 followed by food assistance (21%) and
🔹 help with medical expenses (16%).

While older people are doing the best they can to adapt, extra better-targeted support is needed to help them live safely, independently, and with dignity in our communities.

On this International Day of Older Persons what will you be rethinking or encouraging those in power to rethink to create a fairer landscape?

Understanding what diversity is and what it means when someone is receiving aged care services is vital.

Our culture, beliefs, language and relationships all contribute to each person’s unique identity, which shapes an older person’s aged care journey. The Aged Care Act 2024 recognises older people’s rights to be treated with dignity and respect and acknowledge their identity, culture, spirituality and diversity.

How good is Broome! Advocare team members Nat and Leigh Ann were excited to leave the South West and Perth behind for a few days to visit this wonderful part of the Kimberley. 🌴🌴🌴

During their stay, amongst meeting with local service organisations they were also honoured to be invited to attend the Kimberley Aged Care Collaborative Meeting and the Nirrumbuk Aboriginal Corporation’s Elders Morning Tea. Visiting Broome always presents plenty of personal and professional learning opportunities and this trip was no exception.💜

Nat and Leigh Ann arrived home inspired once more by the resilience of the local older people they had the pleasure of yarning with.

It might just look like a humble bowl of soup, but it means so much more! 🍲

Recently, our Perth office volunteer cooks put on a lunch soup feast for the team to farewell winter and welcome spring.

As a supporter of Act Belong Commit, we’re inspired by their ‘Social September’ initiative and what a better way to make it a ‘Soup-er September’, too!

The team came together to share four wonderful homemade soups with some mouth-watering sweet treats for afters.

… And we all mingled, mixed, laughed and chatted casually about our weekend activities and plans for the warmer weather on the horizon. 💜 💙

We encourage you too to join in and experience the goodness of connecting – whether it’s with others at your workplace, neighbourhood, within a group of friends or a club.

Need some starting tips for that Aged Care services journey?

You may have heard a lot about the Aged Care Assessment Process, especially about the assessment tool with an algorithm. However, the assessment questionnaire is still the most important starting point. Why? You need to be assessed first to access aged care services.

Our Advocates say the 2 main things to do for an assessment are to:

💡Get connected before you need any care assistance.

💡Be honest. Understating your situation and abilities is not helpful.

*More golden starter tips from our Advocates:*

⭕ TIP 1: Register your details with the government’s My Aged Care system sooner rather than later.

My Aged Care helps arrange services for people 65+ (or Aboriginal and 50+). Register early so you have your referral code ready if life changes.

⭕TIP 2: Register a support person with the My Aged Care system.

You don’t have to register a supporter, but you can choose a trusted family member, friend or carer to help communicate decisions and access information with your consent.

⭕TIP 3: Communication difficulties should not be a barrier.

If English is not your first language, call the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450 to contact My Aged Care. It’s usually free, and My Aged Care also offers accessible contact options and resources, just ask.

However, if you get stuck at any point, you can call our free Aged Care Advocacy Line on 1800 700 600 and speak to an Advocate. 💜
