Flu vaccination is an important way to help protect patients in our Emergency Department – especially those who are most vulnerable.

Hospitals care for babies, children and young people with serious illnesses, and vaccination helps reduce the spread of influenza in these high‑risk settings.

It’s easy to access a free flu vaccine across WA this June, even if you don’t have a Medicare card.

For children aged 2–11, a needle‑free nasal spray is available.

Visit your GP, Aboriginal Medical Service or pharmacy – or if you’re at Perth Children’s Hospital:
• drop into the Atrium flu clinic
• or visit the Stan Perron Immunisation Centre (Level 1).

Child and Adolescent Community Health clinics are also offering vaccinations.

The Rotary-Child and Adolescent Health Services (CAHS) Nurse of the Year awards celebrating excellence in nursing were held at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) last week.

This year’s Nurse of the Year winner is Child and Adolescent Community Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Natalie Miller.

Judges said Natalie’s compassionate approach, clinical expertise, and commitment to empowering families made her an invaluable asset to the community and a standout leader in her profession.

“Natalie’s clinical expertise and compassionate approach set a high standard, and it is her influence on colleagues that truly advances the field,” they said.

The award is open to enrolled and registered nurses of all levels working within CAHS and acknowledges nurses who consistently demonstrate an excellent standard of practice in child and family-centered care.

This year six outstanding finalists were chosen from 45 nominations.

Of those finalists, Respiratory Medicine Clinical Nurse Consultant Charlotte Burr was given the Highly Commended award and Enrolled Nurse Ward 1A PCH Maisie McIntyre was given the Emerging Nurse award at the event.

The award sponsored by the Rotary Club of West Perth highlights professionalism, leadership and a commitment to high-quality, safe and evidence-based care within CAHS.

For over two decades, Padmini Saxena has worked as a teacher in WA schools, supporting children and families from a wide range of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

This grounding and her own lived experience fuel her goal to ensure families from all cultural backgrounds feel informed, empowered and supported when navigating the health system and inspired her to become a CAHS Cultural Ambassador.

“As Ambassador, I serve as a vital bridge between my community and the healthcare system,” Padmini said.

She is excited to contribute to a more inclusive health service, where every child, young person and family is treated with dignity, empathy and cultural understanding.

“By strengthening communication, building trust and sharing knowledge both ways, the CAHS Ambassador program has the power to transform service delivery and improve outcomes for children across Western Australia.”

• Needle free flu nasal spray available for children aged 2–11.

At the Child and Adolescent Health Service, we work closely with a small group of passionate individuals – our Community Ambassadors – who share their experiences, ideas and cultural knowledge to help improve care for children, young people and families.

My Why? is a new series where you’ll meet these incredible individuals and hear, in their own words, what drives them to do this important work.

From supporting migrant and refugee families, to advocating for young people, people with disability, and culturally diverse communities, each Ambassador brings a unique perspective and a strong desire to make a difference.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing their stories, what motivates them, and why helping others access and feel confident in health services matters so much.

Meet 7-year-old Vinnique, one of the first children to experience Perth Children’s Hospital’s newly upgraded 3T MRI machine.

Before his scan, Vinnique helped a toy giraffe take a turn through our “Mini Tom Kids” mini MRI – a fun way to build confidence and ease any nerves.

Our upgraded MRI technology delivers clearer images and faster scan times, supporting more accurate diagnoses and better outcomes for our young patients.

Just as importantly, it’s designed with children and families in mind, featuring an enhanced cinematic environment to create a calmer, more comfortable experience.

This $2.5 million upgrade, supported through the Medical Equipment and Imaging Replacement Program, ensures we can continue to deliver high-quality, safe and reliable care for children across Western Australia.
