r. WIRF coordinates nearly 100 volunteers who work tirelessly to support the Foundation, the hospital and patients and Staff at King Edward Memorial Hospital. In addition to this, we have over 300 community knitters and sewers who make specialised garments for use in the hospital’s special care nursery, and comfort blankets for the oncology patients. Our Op Shop accepts pre-loved women's and babies clothing into a donation bin located outside the Op Shop. All donated, pre-loved items go a long way toward helping the patients of our hospital source much needed clothing for themselves and their babies, and assist WIRF to conduct essential research studies into women and infants health.

Congratulations to our CEO, Deb Portughes, on being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of her outstanding service to the community.

As WIRF celebrates its 50th anniversary year, we are incredibly proud to see Deb's decades of dedication recognised through one of Australia's highest honours.

For more than 24 years, Deb has worked across the not-for-profit sector, helping organisations create meaningful change and lasting impact. Over the past decade, she has led WIRF's mission to improve the health and wellbeing of women, babies, and families through research, education, and advocacy.

Under her leadership, WIRF has grown its impact nationally and internationally, supporting research that has improved health outcomes, reduced preterm birth, and demonstrated the power of research to change lives.

Deb's passion for bringing people together around a common purpose, creating opportunities for others, and strengthening communities has inspired so many people along the way.

Please join us in congratulating Deb on this well-deserved recognition. We thank her for her leadership, vision, and commitment to improving the futures of women, babies, and families.

Thank You to incredible individuals who bring so much heart to WIRF.

Our volunteers — from King Edward Memorial Hospital to the wider community — are the quiet champions who support women, babies, and families when it matters most.

They thoughtfully assemble and deliver Baby Bundles and Women's Care Packages, provide clothing for families experiencing loss, and offer kindness and practical help through the Op Shop and the Gift Shop.

Our café volunteers also play a special role — creating a welcoming space for staff, patients, and visitors, and ensuring the café continues to help fund WIRF's vital programs.

And behind the scenes, our generous team of knitters and sewers continue to craft baby wraps, shower bags, NICU physio mats, crib covers, and soft hearts for grieving families — all made with care and love.

To every one of our volunteers: thank you.

Your time, compassion, and unwavering support create lasting impact - and you are truly the heart of our community.
