NSW Rural Fire Service Certifies New Bushfire Prone Land Map

With input from Council staff, a revised Bushfire Prone Land (BFPL) map has been prepared and certified by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) for the Bathurst Region in accordance with legislative requirements.

This mapping is intended to identify land that may be exposed to bush fire hazards so that appropriate considerations can be incorporated into the planning and development process.

A significant update to the BFPL map is the inclusion of Vegetation Category 3 grasslands. These grasslands cover approximately 80% of NSW. The updated map replaces the previous version from 2007 and covers all land within the LGA except actively developing urban zones that are not located within buffer zones to adjoining vegetation categories.

Please note, Bushfire Prone Land maps are not bush fire risk maps. Their purpose is to identify potential bush fire hazards and trigger appropriate assessments.

The new, certified Bushfire Prone Land map can be viewed on Council’s website via this link: https://www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au/Planning-Building/Development/Guides-and-Fact-Sheets

Residents are encouraged to discuss with Council’s planning team how the changes affect them.

Briefings are underway for a joint exercise between the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Police Force, the NSW SES and NSW Ambulance 🔥

This event will include live fire, flashing lights and the use of a drone at the Chifley Fire Control Centre on Hampden Park Road in Kelso.

If you see this and are concerned, don’t be! There are more than enough emergency services on scene to deal with anything 😁

If you do see an unattended fire, be sure to still call 000 as someone will be present with this exercise at all times!

Operations at the Bathurst tip are ongoing with the NSW SES Bathurst Unit jumping in to assist with lighting, allowing crews to work safely.

NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW are now being supported by heavy equipment to pull the pile apart to work on fire extinguishment through the night and into the morning.

As the wind eases through the night, the smoke may settle in surrounding areas and residents are encouraged to keep doors and windows closed.

On a sombre note, our hearts go out to the families and friends of two volunteer members of Marine Rescue NSW, at Ballina, who died attempting the rescue of a sailor on a yacht that was in trouble offshore. Sadly, paying the ultimate price when stepping up for their local community. 🙏
