🚫🌿 Lantana: More Harm Than Good
Lantana (Lantana camara) is one of Australia’s worst invasive w**ds and a serious threat to Wollondilly’s bushland and rural landscapes.
✅ Managing lantana helps protect biodiversity, reduce fire risk, and restore healthier landscapes. Early action, especially over winter, makes long term control more achievable.
Once established, lantana forms dense, spiny thickets that:
❌ Smother native plants and prevent regeneration
❌ Reduce food and habitat for native wildlife
❌ Turn diverse bushland and creek lines into monocultures
🔥 Fire risk:
Lantana burns hot and fast, increasing bushfire intensity. After fire, it often regrows more quickly than native plants, allowing it to dominate again.
🐄 Impacts beyond the bush:
• Reduces pasture productivity
• Restricts access across properties
• Toxic to livestock if eaten
• Increases management and control costs
✅ Winter is a great time to hit lantana
Growth slows during the cooler months, making infestations easier to access and setting the plant up for more effective control when conditions improve.
