You won't have time to think it through when smoke is filling the hallway.

Walk through your home and find two ways out of every room. Pick a safe meeting place outside. Practise it with everyone you live with, kids included.

Plan it now, while it's still just a plan.

A smoke alarm that doesn't work is just a plastic disc on the ceiling.

Test yours every month. If it doesn't beep, replace the battery. If it's older than 10 years, replace the alarm.

National Reconciliation Week is a time to reflect, learn and take meaningful action.

The 2026 theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is shared work. It requires listening, learning, respect, accountability and practical action across everything we do.

This work does not begin or end with one week. It is ongoing and we are committed to continuing the journey.

🚨 CHECK YOUR BLEEPING SMOKE ALARM 🚨

As the weather cools down, house fires increase across NSW β€” with heaters, electric blankets and overloaded power boards all adding to the risk this winter.

Your smoke alarm gives you the warning you need to get out safely. But it can’t save lives if it doesn’t work.

This weekend, take 30 seconds to:
βœ”οΈ Press the test button
βœ”οΈ Replace flat batteries
βœ”οΈ Check alarms are less than 10 years old
βœ”οΈ Make sure everyone in the house knows what the alarm sounds like

Working smoke alarms save lives β€” simple as that.

Don’t wait until it’s too late this winter.

Check your bleeping smoke alarm.

Did you see it? β˜„οΈ

Reports of a bright flash over Sydney last night, possibly a meteor lighting up the sky for just a few seconds. About the same amount of time it takes to test your smoke alarm.

πŸ‘ NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK πŸ‘

This National Volunteer Week, we would like to recognise and thank the incredible volunteers who make up Fire and Rescue NSW’s Community Fire Units (CFU). πŸš’πŸ§‘

Our CFU volunteers play a vital role in helping protect communities located near bushland by assisting with fire preparedness, community education and supporting firefighters during bush fire incidents.

A few facts about Community Fire Units:
πŸ”₯ FRNSW has more than 340 Community Fire Units across NSW
πŸ”₯ CFU volunteers are specially trained local residents who help strengthen community resilience
πŸ”₯ CFUs focus on property protection and community support during bush fires β€” they are not frontline firefighting units

These dedicated volunteers give up their own time to help keep their neighbours and communities safer, and their contribution does not go unnoticed.

To all CFU volunteers β€” thank you for your commitment, professionalism and community spirit. πŸ‘

Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 421 Picton recently attended the home of 102-year-old local Wollondilly resident Jan to conduct a Home Fire Safety Visit following a request from his carer, Sarah.

During the visit, firefighters completed an assessment of the residence, providing important fire safety advice and ensuring the home was fitted with working smoke alarms. While speaking with Jan, crews identified that his severe hearing loss could impact his ability to respond to a standard smoke alarm activation.

To better support Jan’s safety and independence at home, crews arranged for and installed a specialised hard of hearing smoke alarm system designed to provide enhanced alerting capabilities in the event of a fire. These smoke alarms provide additional support through the use of a vibrating pad placed underneath a bed and a bright strobe light upon activation.

The visit highlights the ongoing commitment of Fire and Rescue NSW crews to protecting vulnerable members of the community through proactive fire safety education and tailored solutions that meet individual needs.

FRNSW encourages members of the community, carers and family members to request a free Home Fire Safety Visit for anyone who may be at higher risk in the event of a fire, including elderly residents and those with additional support needs.

These batteries can become a fire risk if damaged or misused.

Stay safe by:
β€’ Only using the charger supplied by the manufacturer
β€’ Charging on hard, non-flammable surfaces (not beds or lounges)
β€’ Avoiding overcharging or leaving batteries charging unattended for long periods
