NSW SES Wollondilly Unit has been around since the early 1960's and is made up of Volunteer SES Members that respond to local floods, storms and assist other agencies in Emergency situations within the Wollondilly Shire. The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers,

with 229 units located throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. while our core responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other
emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

The Nepean River at Menangle was a hive of activity last Saturday as three units, NSW SES Camden Unit, NSW SES Wingecarribee Unit and NSW SES Wollondilly Unit came together to sharpen there flood rescue skills 🦺

This is to put our volunteers and our equipment through their paces in a series of scenarios to put them through currency 🫡

This wasn't just a drill; it was an opportunity for our crews to synchronize their tactics and build foundations to work together closely across units 🚒

Great job to everyone on the day and behind the scenes who was involved! 🧡

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

Today, the NSW SES Wingecarribee Unit, NSW SES Moss Vale Unit and NSW SES Wollondilly Unit, pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit of the men and women who have served - and continue to serve - our nation in times of conflict, peacekeeping, and humanitarian need.

ANZAC Day reminds us of the values that shape our communities and our service: courage, mateship, endurance, and sacrifice.

As we gather at dawn services, marches, and commemorations across the Southern Highlands and the Wollondilly Shire, we remember all who have served, all who still serve, and all who never made it home.

Lest we forget 🌹
