AFL clubs, schools and councils in NSW... do you have a facility project sitting on the wish list?

Round 2 of the AFL New South Wales Facilities Fund is now open, with up to $50,000 available per project to improve community football facilities.

Funding can go towards things like changerooms, lighting, playing surfaces, drainage and irrigation, new ovals and amenities, climate-resilience works and upgrades to multi-use facilities where football is a key user.

A couple of things to know before you dive in:

The grant request should generally be no more than 10% of the total project cost.

A co-contribution isn’t compulsory, but other financial and in-kind contributions are viewed favourably.

Equipment purchases, routine maintenance and projects that have already started aren’t eligible.

And a whopping 50% of the assessment is about what your project will achieve, including how it will increase participation and improve access.

So this is one where having a good building project alone isn’t enough. You need to make the case for what that facility will make possible.

Applications close 30 September 2026.

Own or operate a dedicated live music venue in NSW?

This grant is worth a look.

Sound NSW has opened its Infrastructure and Equipment grants, with funding of up to $150,000 for equipment and infrastructure upgrades or up to $300,000 for high-end audiovisual and advanced lighting technology.

That could include things like sound and lighting equipment, staging, soundproofing, accessibility improvements, ventilation, energy-efficiency works, LED video walls, projection systems and intelligent lighting.

Applicants need to contribute at least 30% of the project budget, and this one has a two-stage application process, starting with an Expression of Interest.

And check the eligibility carefully because it really is aimed at dedicated live music venues, with specific requirements around how often you program live music and the type of music you program.

EOIs close at 2pm on 28 September 2026.

Manufacturers of Australia... if any part of your line still runs on gas or solvents, whether that is coating, drying, steam or melting, there is money right now to get it updated.

The SME Industrial Decarbonisation Fund has 3 objectives, and is offering $200,000 to $500,000 towards projects to update surface treatment, process steam and metals processing.

And it covers more than the equipment: power supply upgrades, staff training and compliance costs can all sit inside the project.

You need to fund up to 50% of eligible costs.

Applications are open until 31 December 2027, or until the pool is fully allocated - THIS IS IMPORTANT!

There is only $10 million available and it is assessed first come, first served. So, at $500,000 a project, as few as 20 businesses get it and then it is done.

The ones who miss out on a rolling program like this are usually the ones who took too long to get organised.

SEDI Grants (Social Enterprise Development Initiative) are OPEN.

This funding opportunity worth knowing about if you work in the social enterprise space.

Tara has broken down the SEDI Capability Building Grants, including the separate First Nations stream and what organisations can use the funding for.

Grants of up to $120,000 are available.

The NAB Foundation Community Grants close on 14 September – that’s just over 2 weeks away.

There's funding of up to $25,000 for local projects that help communities withstand and recover from natural disasters. Plus, an additional $200,000 is available in Impact Grants for projects with big potential. These Impact Grants provide a further $25,000 to recipients to maximise the impact they have on their communities.

This grant is just one of the over 50 current programs in this month's Grant Wise workbook.

Each month we pull together the national and state grants that are actually open, sorted by who's eligible and when they close, so you can see what's worth your time in about ten minutes instead of trawling portals for an afternoon.

Some of these rounds open and close inside a month. If a deadline like this one has crept up on you, that's exactly what the list is for.

Somewhere in your business there's probably a project you've parked.

The bigger premises.

The equipment that would let you take on more staff.

The idea that needed capital you didn't have spare.

For a lot of owners, that project stays parked for years. The money was often out there the whole time. They just assumed funding was meant for someone else.

The businesses that get these projects off the ground usually aren't doing anything you couldn't. They tested the assumption instead of accepting it.

Here's a quick way to test yours. Does the project deliver something beyond your own bottom line e.g. jobs, training, a service the area's missing, a move to cleaner or cheaper operations? Can you put real numbers to what it costs and what it would produce? Could someone outside your business see why it matters in a sentence?

If that's a yes, there's a fair chance a program exists that your project would suit a funding opportunity somewhere.

If you're building apartments or unlocking an infill site in metro Perth, WA's Infrastructure Development Fund is open again.

It helps cover headworks, the cost of connecting new housing to power, water and sewerage, through two streams.

Stream 1 is a rebate of up to $10,000 per apartment towards your Water Corporation and Western Power connection costs, and this round you can also recoup your DAP or Significant Development Pathway application fees once construction is finished.

Stream 2 funds precinct-scale infrastructure to unblock medium and high-density development. It's for infill near train stations and activity centres, the Cockburn, Kwinana and Rockingham areas, the Bunbury CBD and Housing Diversity Pipeline sites.

There's $20 million in this round, open now until 30 June 2027 or until the money runs out, and with a pool that size "runs out" can come first.

One thing worth knowing up front. This is Streams 1 and 2 only. Unfortunately, Stream 3, the regional worker accommodation stream, is closed this time.

Stream 2 is assessed on a business case. Assessors will want to see a real infrastructure constraint holding back housing that will actually get built, costed by the service authority or a quantity surveyor, with genuine intent to deliver. You won’t be able to present a standard site connection backlog as a bottleneck.

So if you've got an infill project that fits, it's worth a proper look, and worth talking through early while there's time to build the case.

When Jade and Art Skotniczny opened SOAK Hospitality in Dampier, they built something the whole community got behind.

So, when they set out to do it again in Karratha, we knew it was exactly the kind of project a funding body wants to back.

We had the privilege of writing two grant applications – a RED and an RJED - for their new venture, KAOS, an upmarket café which will bring jobs and more life in the Karratha CBD.

This tangible local benefit makes a strong funding case for assessors, and Jade and Art backed it up with a track record that proved they could deliver.

Tara got to visit the site while she was up in Karratha running grant and business case writing workshops for the City of Karratha, and watching a project like this go from application to nearly-open doors is the best part of what we do.
