Budget Estimates Week in Parliament has just wrapped up.
It was a valuable opportunity to scrutinise government spending, ask hundreds of detailed questions of Ministers about the Budget and their portfolios, and pursue answers on the issues and projects that matter to our communities.
Accountability and government transparency matters, and Estimates Week is one of the most important ways the Opposition can help ensure taxpayers’ money is being used responsibly and effectively.
Over three days, we held around 104 separate committee sessions, totalling 36 hours of hearings.
We did not always get clear or straight answers, but most of the Ministers engaged professionally and respectfully, recognising that accountability and scrutiny are essential to maintaining trust in our institutions, and of course there were one or two who didn't really want to be there.
Thanks to all the staff on both sides that worked very hard in preparing for the week, and to The Parliament of Western Australia officers and their teams who helped make it all run smoothly.
Each session was recorded and Hansard is available online, so if there’s a topic of interest, or you’re a budget or policy nerd, head to the parliamentary website. You can be the judge of who is doing their job well.
