I really appreciated the invitation to visit the Harry Butler Institute at Murdoch University and spend time with Professor Treena Burgess, Associate Professor Stephen Beatty, Associate Professor John Ruprecht and Professor Trish Fleming, and later to meet with Professor Navid Moheimani.

In my role as Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate, Science and Innovation, it was valuable to hear directly from the people doing the work, not just about the research itself, but how it is being applied in the real world.

The Harry Butler Institute is working across some really important areas for Western Australia, from biodiversity and biosecurity, to aquatic ecosystems, hydrology, wildlife conservation, invasive species, water quality and new opportunities in algal biotechnology.

What stood out to me most was how practical so much of the work is. It can help restore rivers and catchments, protect native wildlife, improve how we manage water, respond to invasive species, and explore new ways to support agriculture and industry.

It was a great reminder of the depth of scientific expertise we have here in WA, and why it is so important that the government keeps backing good science, practical research and innovation.

Great to catch up with the team at Harvey Connect on Uduc Road recently.

They do an amazing job supporting local seniors, helping people stay connected, providing meals and creating a welcoming space for the Harvey community.

The new upgrades look terrific, and just as importantly, the Rolls-Royce of coffee machines is state-of-the-art!

Great to stop by the The Coolup General Store, a hardworking local business supporting locals and helping keep the community connected.

Small businesses like this are the backbone of our rural towns. They create jobs, support families and put everything on the line to keep serving their communities.

With costs already rising across wages, power, insurance, rent and supplies, small businesses need certainty and a government that understands the pressure they are under, not more tax uncertainty that makes it harder to plan, employ locals and stay open.

I recently had the privilege of touring WA Wildlife in Bibra Lake, Darling Range Wildlife Shelter WA and Kanyana Wildlife in Lesmurdie.

I was impressed by both the quality of care provided and the sheer scale of the work these organisations do every day.

WA Wildlife alone admits more than 6,000 sick and injured animals each year, answers more than 15,000 wildlife-related calls, and is supported by more than 100,000 volunteer hours. Kanyana Wildlife admits more than 4,700 animals annually, while Darling Range Wildlife Shelter records well over 1,500 admissions each year. Collectively, these organisations care for more than 10,000 native animals annually.

These are essential frontline services for WA’s wildlife, often relying heavily on volunteers, donations and community grants.

Thank you to the dedicated carers, vets, staff and volunteers who took the time to brief me on your operations and challenges. Your compassion and commitment to giving injured wildlife a second chance is extraordinary.

Western Australia’s native wildlife is an irreplaceable part of our state’s identity, environment and future, and the organisations caring for it deserve practical, sustainable support. Government has an important role to play in ensuring they are not left to carry the burden alone.

It was great to meet with George and Chris, two passionate local residents who have spent many years observing and monitoring the health of the Leschenault Estuary in Australind.

They shared their concerns with Hon. Michelle Boylan MLC and me about changes they have observed first-hand in the estuary over time, including the health of fish, marine mammals and birdlife.

We also discussed the importance and need for robust and ongoing scientific environmental monitoring, including around harbour activity, dredging, storm events and the broader health of the catchment.

The Leschenault Estuary is a much-loved local waterway that supports important wildlife, recreation and the broader community identity.

Local residents who take the time to speak up for their environment provide valuable on-the-ground insight, and their concerns deserve to be heard.

It was a pleasure to meet with Gareth Talbot, CEO of Midway - Your Life, Your Way, to discuss the organisation’s future vision for expanding support for people with disability across the region.

Midway’s work is centred on helping people live with independence, dignity and choice, from Supported Independent Living to individualised living options that promote community inclusion and provide a safe, secure home environment.

I also had the opportunity to visit some of Midway’s new accessible housing and hear more about their Community and Inclusion support model, as well as their ongoing commitment to expanding the choices available to people with disability and their families locally.

Organisations like Midway play an important role in building a more inclusive community, and I look forward to seeing their work continue to progress.
