The Bureau of Meteorology has updated a Severe Weather Warning for HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL

Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East, Lower South East, North East Pastoral and parts of Kangaroo Island, North West Pastoral, West Coast and Lower Eyre Peninsula districts.

Issued at 5:09 am CDT on Sunday 1 March 2026

HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL THROUGH EASTERN PARTS OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Weather Situation: A low pressure system located near Oodnadatta is steadily moving southwards. An extremely humid tropical airmass is wrapping around the eastern and southern flank of this low, extending into central and southern parts of the state. A trough over southern SA will interact with the tropical airmass today, increasing the risk of heavy, locally intense falls, particularly during the late hours of Sunday.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is likely about northern and eastern parts of the state today. Six hourly rainfall totals between 40 to 60 mm are possible about central and eastern parts today.

Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is possible in the eastern part of the state. A more localised risk also exists with any thunderstorm elsewhere given the very high moisture levels. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 60 to 100 mm are possible today.

Flood Watches and Warnings are current for the area. Please refer to https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts/ for more information.

Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Whyalla, Renmark, Mount Gambier, Port Augusta and Port Pirie.

58.4 mm was recorded at Yunta in the 6 hours to 4:45 am this morning.

46.2 mm of rainfall was recorded at Naracoorte in the 6 hours to 1:45 pm.

41.4 mm of rainfall was recorded at Cape Jaffa in the 6 hours to 1:29 pm.

51 mm of rainfall was recorded at Robe in the 6 hours to 1:19 pm.

Here’s the updated Flood Watch area in South Australia. This image shows just how much of the state is covered in the Bureau of Meteorology Flood Watch issued today.

Yep, that’s right, pretty much the whole state! So, it’s important for all of us to be prepared.

The highest rainfall totals are forecast over North East Pastoral district during today. However, rainfall is forecast to extend southwards from Friday and over the weekend. Accumulated rainfall totals will be significant.

What can you do to be prepared and stay safe?
> Where it is safe to do so, clear gutters, downpipes and drains to prevent water damage to your home or property
> Check whether you need sandbags. If your property is prone to flooding, SES sandbag pod locations are listed on the SES website: https://www.ses.sa.gov.au/incidents-and-warnings/about-sa-ses-sandbag-locations
> Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater.
> Keep children well away from floodwater, creeks and storm drains.
> If you’re travelling, ensure you have adequate food and water for the trip. Visit the South Australia Police website for more information about holiday and remote travel safety: www.police.sa.gov.au/your-safety/crime-prevention-and-security/holiday-and-remote-travel-safety
> Take extra care, drive to the conditions, and adhere to road closures. You can check road closures via SA Infrastructure and Transport TrafficSA website: www.traffic.sa.gov.au
> Check on friends, family and neighbours during and after this rain event to ensure they’re safe and doing OK
