Well done District Council of Tumby Bay for completing these works ✅

The Eyes on Eyre program has been about minimising environmental impacts while improving visitor amenity, at priority coastal campgrounds. More than 10 sites have been improved under this program during the past few years.

Are feral goats a concern around your area? 🐐🐐

We’re looking for Eastern Eyre Peninsula landholders who are keen to be part of upcoming aerial goat control program 10-18 August, especially around the Minbrie Range area.

Feral goats are on the rise across EP and are a major cause of land degradation through overgrazing - so we’re providing free aerial control to assist landholders to get on top of the problem.

📑💧The plan for sustainably managing and sharing Eyre Peninsula’s groundwater resources across community, industry, environmental and cultural needs, has now been finalised after an extensive review.

The Water Allocation Plan for Southern Basins and Musgrave Prescribed Wells Areas sets a clear direction for sustainable water management across the region. This new 2026 version is an amendment of the 2016 plan.

The plan will come into effect from 1 July 2026.

Some key points:
💧No access changes to water for stock and domestic use, or for environmental and cultural purposes.

💧The science is clear that groundwater in some areas is under pressure, leading to declining water levels and increasing salinity risks, particularly in coastal areas where seawater intrusion can threaten freshwater supplies.

💧Introduction of stronger monitoring and risk management requirements for larger water users, including mandatory Risk Management and Monitoring Plans that set triggers and actions to protect the resource, users and the environment.

💧Licensed extraction has been reduced in parts of the Southern Basins to support long-term sustainability including closure of the Uley Wanilla and Lincoln South groundwater resources; and a reduction in the Uley South basin limit.

💧Introduction of a simpler allocation system, aimed at improving certainty for some licence holders by reducing year-to-year variability and maintaining minimum allocations in other areas, where conditions allow.

💧Any changes to licences as a result of the updated Plan, are issued by the Department for Environment and Water.

📣Today our Ceduna Landscape Officer Andrew, spoke on ABC’s regional morning program about summer w**d control work our western team has achieved recently.

If you missed it, some of the key points were:
🌿Buffel grass, Fountain grass and African lovegrass are summer w**ds of high concern. Our team – with the help of contractors – delivered targeted control programs across priority areas this summer & autumn, particularly along major road corridors which act as key pathways for w**d spread.

🌿These species are all highly invasive and can outcompete native vegetation, reduce habitat quality, impact agricultural land, and increase fire risk due to dense grass fuel loads, which can cause landscape scale changes. Once established, they are very difficult and costly to control, so early detection and response is critical.

📍We can’t be everywhere so rely on sightings from the public – we’ve had some valuable sightings in the past months. The most helpful reports include clear photos of the plant, a GPS location or dropped pin, and an indication of how large the infestation is. This information helps us quickly identify species, prioritise responses and coordinate site visits more effectively.

With our 20+ staff spread across 8 offices, it’s not often we’re in the same room together. Recently a bunch of us met in Whyalla, sharing updates on projects, and meeting new staff.

It was especially rewarding to see how the efforts of our previous saltmarsh threat abatement and recovery works were faring, several years after our project work. And of course while we were there, we did some maintenance work, helping to ensure past conservation efforts continue into the future.

We were also privileged to see the first Cuttlefish of the season with Spencer Gulf Adventures 🦑🙌

Oceans away from her homeland in Peru where she began a career in biodiversity conservation, our Cleve Landscape Officer Claudia loves her diverse role with us.

One day she’s surveying pest plant populations or updating action plans, the next she’s assisting farmers with water testing, supplying fox baits, or supporting local revegetation and grassroot grants projects with schools and community groups.

💬“Communities here rely deeply on a healthy environment,” she says. “By tackling issues such as pest infestations, soil degradation, water management challenges, and biodiversity loss, we help create healthier landscapes that are more resilient to harsh weather, provide sustainable resources for future generations, and ultimately support greater productivity for our communities.”
