AUSALERT is Australia’s new national warning system being rolled out by the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA).
This new system will work alongside existing warning and notification systems such as Alert SA, emergency service social media pages, ABC Radio, and other media outlets.
Unlike traditional SMS messaging or phone calls, AUSALERT uses cell broadcast technology. This means any mobile phone connected to a tower within the warning area will receive the alert notification.
There are two types of alerts:
• Priority Alerts – these follow your normal phone settings. For example, if your phone is on silent, you will not hear an alert tone.
• Critical Alerts – these override your phone settings and will sound an audible siren for approximately 10 seconds, with the warning message appearing on your screen.
On Saturday 20 June at 11:00am, there will be a community-based test of the new system. The City of Port Lincoln has been selected as the test location.
If you are within the City of Port Lincoln council boundary, you should receive the notification. The message will clearly state that it is a test. There is also a small possibility that people outside the council area may receive the notification if their phone is connected to a tower within the test area, although the system is designed to be highly accurate.
A second nationwide test will occur on Monday 27 June at 1:30pm. This message will also clearly identify itself as a test.
As a reminder, during emergencies you should monitor multiple sources of information, including:
• Emergency service social media pages
• ABC Radio
• Official warning apps and notifications
Never rely on a single source of emergency information.
