137 CERTIFICATES PRESENTED AT AWARDS ASSEMBLY...

At a whole school assembly staged in the Gym earlier today, 137 certificates were presented to students across all six year levels - these were in recognition of their outstanding achievements last term and throughout Semester 1. We were thrilled to host a record number of proud parents and caregivers at today's awards ceremony, and at the packed celebratory luncheon which followed in the Staff Room.

Today’s assembly was again well compered by School Captains Airlie Hartwich and Max Stanley. The proceedings commenced with a Welcome to Country delivered by Year 9 student Skyla Long with an Acknowledgement from Year 8 student Anastasia Charnock. They were followed by Mr. Craig Akehurst, who discussed the themes of success and belonging in his Principal’s Address.

Year Level Support staff then announced the names of all those who had earned Academic Excellence Awards (based on outstanding grades on their Semester 1 report cards) and/or Crew Awards (for consistently demonstrating our three school values – Responsible, Respectful & Inclusive), with Channel Leaders and Dharna Crew Leaders presenting certificates of achievement to the worthy recipients.

Congratulations to all of today’s award-winners and many thanks again to the parents/caregivers who supported our event.

YEAR 6's EXPLORE CULTURES & LANGUAGES AT PLHS...

Yesterday, we were delighted to host approximately 110 Year 6 students and staff from Port Lincoln Primary School, Kirton Point Primary School, Lincoln Gardens Primary School, Lake Wangary School and Poonindie Community Learning Centre for our second "Exploring Culture & Languages @ PLHS" expo.

This event was designed to showcase the three cultures/languages on offer at PLHS – Aboriginal, Indonesian and Japanese. Our Year 6 guests formed eight groups in the Specialist Building, with each Crew rotating through the following range of culture– and language–based activities:

ABORIGINAL:
• Indigenous weaving

INDONESIAN:
• Ketupat paper craft
• Penjor making & decorating
• Lomba relays
• Angklung musical instruments

JAPANESE:
• Hiragana escape room
• Sumo squat challenge and Kendama competition
• Hashi chopstick challenges
• Sensu folding fans

Congratulations to our Languages teachers and Aboriginal Education team on their wonderful organisation and delivery of the event. The consistently high engagement levels on display in each space were indicative of months of thoughtful planning. It was clear to those in attendance that the participating students greatly enjoyed connecting with each other through culture and language.

Well done also to the twenty-five PLHS Year 9 Language students who volunteered to support our staff in facilitating yesterday's activities and welcoming/farewelling our Year 6 visitors. The efforts of these students went a long way towards fostering a strong sense of belonging to our Port Lincoln High School Crew.

~ Mrs. Tanya Booker (Japanese Sensei)

NOTE: This wonderful initiative was made possible by way of a "Languages Curriculum Engagement Funding" grant courtesy of the Department for Education and the SA Curriculum Languages Practice Networks. We are grateful for this opportunity to showcase both our highly successful Language learning program and the importance we place on cultural diversity at Port Lincoln High School.

We trust that the Year 6's enjoyed their time spent with us yesterday in what has become a very popular element of our extensive transition to high school program. Parents and community members are also welcome to join us at our upcoming Open Night (Wednesday September 2nd 4:30~6pm) to "Explore Culture & Languages @ PLHS" too.

SUCCESS FOR PLHS AT EUROPEAN HANDBALL CARNIVAL…

What an incredible day at Cummins for the European Handball carnival! On Wednesday August 5th, Port Lincoln High School proudly fielded two Year 7 teams to compete against other Eyre Peninsula schools. Throughout the spirited competition, our PLHS Crew demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork; to top it off, our girls’ team brought home the win and claimed the pennant!

The girls went undefeated during the carnival, recording four wins and a draw to book a place in the grand final; there we took on Cummins AS, who we had drawn with earlier in the day. In the GF, our girls overcame an early Cummins lead to come back and narrowly win the game 11-10. Meanwhile, our boys finished second in their pool with a win, a draw and a loss – this then resulted in a final for third place overall, which we unfortunately lost.

A big thank you goes to three amazing Year 8 students – Esix Curtis, Angas Stoakes and Harry Rowley – who umpired our teams; your leadership and support were invaluable to the day’s success.
Go PLHS!

PLHS ON SHOW AT THE PORT LINCOLN SHOW...

The Show must go on! Despite the dodgy weather, thousands of people have attended today's Port Lincoln Show at the Racecourse.

Once again, Port Lincoln High School is proud to support this wonderful community event. This year, we have had:

* an Aquaculture display featuring several of our barramundi, a tropical fish tank and two information mobiles created by our Room 21 class; quite a few Show patrons have taken the opportunity today to Adopt-a-Barra - congratulations to Mr. Chris McGown and the Room 21 students on this very popular exhibit

* a static display of PLHS promotional images and giveaways

If you are still planning to attend the Show this afternoon, please come into the Show Hub and say g'day.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS WITH SISTER SCHOOL DELEGATION...

As we reported earlier in the week, students and staff from Muroto High School, our Japanese sister school, have visited us this week. Many wonderful cultural connections have been forged both at school and in the wider community.

Please enjoy these extra images of this week's cultural exchange; they include a visit to Glen Forest Tourist Park, time spent in a variety of PLHS classrooms and a guided street walk.

BRONZE MEDALS FOR SA FOOTY REPS HARRY & LINCOLN…

Last week, two PLHS students proudly represented their school and state in Australian Rules football at the 2026 School Sport Australia Games in Melbourne – congratulations to Harry Nagel (Year 9) and Lincoln Stelzer-Linn (Year 8) on this wonderful achievement.

In the 14 years and under competition, Harry and Lincoln were integral members of the talented South Australian team, which ultimately came away with a hard-fought overall third place.

After a narrow four-point loss to Western Australia, the SA team bounced back brilliantly with convincing wins over Queensland and Victoria White to earn a semi-final clash with the eventual champions, Victoria Navy. Although they fell short in the semi-final, they were the team that came closest to defeating this strong outfit.

The SA boys finished the carnival on a high with a convincing win over NSW to secure an outstanding bronze medal.

It was a fantastic week of learning, growth and development for both boys, who represented PLHS with pride, determination and excellence across the week. They consistently demonstrated their school values throughout the carnival and translated their PLHS crew spirit into a strong, team-first mentality.

Well done, Harry and Lincoln – we are incredibly proud of your achievements and the manner in which you represented our school and state; we will follow your footy progress with great interest over the years to come and look forward to more positive results.

"DEADLY STUDENTS" CELEBRATED AT MORNING TEA...

On Friday July 31st, PLHS celebrated our Term 2 “Deadly Students” – this award is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and recognises their outstanding application to their schoolwork, involvement in the school community and consistent demonstration of our school values.

In true PLHS Crew spirit, the Term 2 award recipients, their families and teachers were invited to a shared morning tea in the Aboriginal Education Room to celebrate the hard work of the students and the important adults who support them.

Thank you to all who attended; we look forward to announcing our next crew of “Deadly Students” later this term.
