EXPLORING FUTURES: STUDENTS INSPIRED AT CAREER ROADSHOW…

On Tuesday June 2nd, our Year 9 students – along with seven selected senior students – attended the 2026 Port Lincoln Career Roadshow held at the Port Lincoln Racecourse. The event provided an invaluable opportunity for students to engage with representatives from over eighty different career industries. Each industry showcased an immersive activity, allowing students to build a deeper understanding of the diverse pathways available to them beyond their schooling.

An absolute highlight of the day included a private meet and greet with Katherine Bennell-Pegg, Australian astronaut and current Australian of the Year. Katherine shared her inspiring journey and spoke passionately about the importance of pursuing your ambitions. She spoke strongly about working towards your goals and not letting barriers get in the way of your dreams.

The event was a tremendous success, with students leaving motivated and more informed about the many possibilities that await them post-school. A large thank you to the facilitating staff who supported me in providing this important opportunity to our students.

YEAR 9 ARTISTS AWARDED AT COMMUNITY EXHIBITION...

We are delighted to announce that several members of our Year 9 Visual Arts crew were awarded prizes in the Year 7–12 age section at “Hope, the Coast & Us”, a recent community fundraiser for the Lower Eyre Coastcare Association. Congratulations to Isla Wilson, Mahli Sellen and Indie Abley (third place) and Aliyah Harding (fourth place).

The exhibition was part of a wider event including local musicians, renowned visual artists, local small businesses and Lake Wangary Primary School, and celebrated the ten-year anniversary of Greenly Planting Days.

Our exhibiting students were very proud of their contributions towards this wonderful community event.

YEAR 9s PRODUCE SENSATIONAL CELEBRATION CAKES...

We're thrilled to share the work of our Year 9 Food Technology students who have just wrapped up an exciting unit on "Foods for Celebration". Each member of our crew was given the opportunity to design a cake for a party of their choice, showcasing their creativity and culinary skills.

Throughout this unit, they demonstrated remarkable curiosity by experimenting with different flavours and techniques to bring their unique designs to life. As these images clearly show, the results were impressive!

A huge congratulations to our talented students for their hard work and dedication. We can't wait to see what they cook up next!

YEAR 11 DHARNA CREWS DECORATE “DEADLY DOORS”...

For National Reconciliation Week, our Year 11 Dharna Crews participated in a “Deadly Door Competition” where they decorated their classroom door celebrating this year’s “ALL IN” theme.

Each Crew had a week to design and decorate their door using culturally appropriate symbols, with extra points awarded for acknowledging Aboriginal artwork where applicable. All Crews did an amazing job, with the doors celebrating Aboriginal culture and promoting reconciliation.

Congratulations to Mrs. Lucy Tarin and Ms. Caitlin Randall’s Dharna Crews who won for their combined effort, decorating the “ALL IN” tree of hands.

SUCCESSFUL BARRAMUNDI SPAWNING PROJECT...

Each year, the students in my Year 12 Aquaculture class are given the challenge to spawn our thirteen-year-old broodstock barramundi.

This is one of their major projects; it takes three months of lead-up time to imitate the natural spawning process by slowly raising the temperature of the water, increasing the photoperiod to fifteen hours and feeding the fish a natural diet of fish and squid. Manipulating the environmental conditions is an important skill in the aquaculture business.

Credit to this year’s crew as they were ultimately successful in their project; late last week, they collected over two million eggs.

JAPANESE CREW ATTENDS CONSUL-GENERAL CIVIC RECEPTION…

On Thursday May 28th, our Year 11 and 12 Japanese language crew was invited to attend a civic reception hosted by the City of Port Lincoln in honour of the Consul General of Japan’s special visit to our community.

The students and I walked to the Council Chambers to participate in this unique opportunity; the welcome reception included presentations and speeches by Mayor Diana Mislov, Chairperson of the Muroto Port Lincoln Friendship Committee, Shaun Thomas, and the guest of honour himself, Consul General Furuya of Japan. Entertainment included a performance showcasing traditional Japanese instruments, the thirteen-stringed koto and taiko drum. Our students were able to engage in conversations in both Japanese and English with local leaders and community members who share connections to Japan.

This event not only gave our students a chance to demonstrate their school values and utilise their Japanese language skills in a real-world context, but it also deepened their understanding of international relationships and intercultural respect. Further, the afternoon provided valuable insight into local government protocols and highlighted the importance of community involvement and global citizenship.

Thank you to everyone who supported this memorable and enriching learning experience.

CREW SPIRIT ON DISPLAY DURING NRW LUNCHTIME GAMES…

Well done and thank you to Mr. Hayden Bennett and four of his Year 10 SAASTA students for organising and running the following series of staff and student games during three lunchtimes last week:
• Tuesday: Netball in the Gym
• Thursday: Badminton in the Gym
• Friday: Crossover Football on the Oval

As well as providing several more fun activities to our busy National Reconciliation Week celebration schedule, the SAASTA students were able to incorporate the event as part of an assessment for their current assignment.

As these images clearly demonstrate, the games were well attended and facilitated, with our school values and plenty of Crew spirit on display throughout.

Congratulations to all involved.

YEAR 9/10 CREWS GO “ALL IN” FOR RECONCILIATION WEEK…

YEAR 9: Our entire Year 9 crew met on the Oval to celebrate the “ALL IN” them by creating a space for students to come together and enjoy the morning.

Students created and listened to a playlist of Indigenous musical artists which created a great vibe. Spikeball was played, art was created and a sausage sizzle was enjoyed by students and staff alike. The resulting artwork will eventually form part of a display showcasing our students' involvement with PLHS throughout the year.

YEAR 10: Meanwhile, our Year 10 Dharna Crews converged on the Specialist Building. Once assembled, students and staff watched a BTN segment dedicated to the history of National Reconciliation Week and the “ALL IN” theme of this year’s celebration; the clip was centred around the Nunga Tag carnival in Adelaide and featured several young Aboriginal students from the West Coast. All in attendance were then given an opportunity to write a short reflection which included links to our three School Values and a personal pledge for the future.

A special Reconciliation Week-themed morning tea was then enjoyed, with students invited to craft an Aboriginal flag pancake using pre-made red, yellow and black batter, and try a range of bush tucker jams on scones – whilst the quandong and lemon myrtle flavours were very popular, the more adventurous savoured the green ant jam.

A colouring-in competition was also attempted, with a prize on offer for the best completed entry.

We congratulate and thank Mrs. Stacey Hartwich (Year Level Support) for her outstanding organisation and delivery of this highly successful event.
