๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ Train Hard Rescue Easy ๐Ÿš˜๐Ÿš˜

The NSW SES Port Macquarie Unit were at it again with their General Land Rescue Operators, training challenging scenarios we may but hopefully not encounter on our roads. A scenario was put together simulating a large tree which has fallen over in a storm and crushed 2 cars in the process entrapping 5 person in the vehicles.

Realistic training helps us keep our skills sharp and builds our trust in each other to conduct a successful and patient oriented rescue.

Special thanks to The Sanctuary Port Macquarie and KAZAC Civil for allowing access to your site and assistance when setting up these scenarios, where it is safe for us to challenge our team members.

๐ŸŒ„ Vertical Rescue Call Out at Hat Head ๐Ÿšจ

Today members of the NSW SES Port Macquarie Unit were called out to assist with a steep slope recovery at Hat Head. A hiker took a bit of a tumble and injured their shoulder making self extrication a challenge. Our team worked together with Fire and Rescue NSW Kempsey and South West Rocks including NSW Ambulance Paramedics to achieve a patient oriented carry out and extrication. This involved a 2km carry out via stretcher.

It was great to see agencies working seamlessly together, ensuring a safe rescue operation not only for the patient but the collaboration and camaraderie between each other.

We wish the patient a speedy recovery and hopefully a delicious Spaghetti Bolognese for dinner tonight ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜…

๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿชš Our NSW SES Port Macquarie Unit members are learning new skills as they undertake the Chainsaw Cross Cut Course ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿชš

The training provides the knowledge and practical experience needed to safely trim and cut felled trees during emergency operations, covering chainsaw safety, maintenance, equipment use, and cross-cutting techniques.

Training like this helps ensure our volunteers are ready to respond safely and effectively when our community needs us most. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก

Today, NSW SES Port Macquarie Unit was proud to join our emergency service partners at the inaugural Westport Polar Plunge, supporting the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) and Special Olympics Australia. ๐Ÿ’™

The Polar Plunge is more than a cold dip. It is a chance for emergency services and the wider community to come together, show support for inclusion, and make a lasting difference for local Special Olympics athletes. Together we are supporting inclusive sports programs that build confidence, friendships and opportunities in our communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the plunge, volunteered and cheered from the sidelines.

๐Ÿšจ UPDATE - We now have our Next Generation of Storm Operators fully qualified ๐Ÿšจ

Over the past several weeks, members of the NSW SES Port Macquarie Unit have been undertaking intensive training to become qualified Storm Operators for both Ground and Heights Operations.

These new volunteers all share a common passion and commitment: dedicating their time, skills, and energy to supporting the Port Macquarie-Hastings community when it needs us most. Whether responding to floods, storms, tsunamis, severe winds, or heavy rainfall events, they are preparing to be ready.

Throughout the course, participants have been learning from some of the Unit's most experienced senior operators, gaining valuable hands-on skills including:

โœ… Sandbagging homes and businesses
โœ… Temporary repairs to storm-damaged properties
โœ… Ground-based storm response operations
โœ… Working safely at heights to protect homes and businesses

On successful completion, these volunteers receive nationally recognised qualifications in Storm Operations (Ground and Heights), providing them with the skills and confidence to support our community during emergencies.

We are proud of the dedication shown by these new operators and thank our senior members who continue to share their knowledge and experience, strengthening the capability of our Unit for the future.

When the next storm hits, the winds bring down trees, or heavy rain impacts our region, these volunteers will be ready to answer the call.

A big thank you to Hastings Mens Shed for the use of their facility

๐ŸŒŸ A night to remember! ๐ŸŒŸ

The recent visit by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of NSW, was an important moment for our unit and wider community. Her excellency recognised the resilience, strength and spirit shown across the Port Macquarie region during the May 2025 floods.

Our Unit Commander Katie was also selected to attend the Governorโ€™s special First Responders Reception at Government House on Wednesday this week, representing the NSW SES Northern Zone. The evening brought together volunteers, emergency services personnel and defence members from across NSW, and served as a meaningful reminder that every response, every volunteer hour and every act of service helps make our communities stronger.

Recognition like this shines a light on the incredible efforts of those who step up in times of need, including our unit's SES volunteers, and highlights the power of communities working together to support one another when it matters most.

๐ŸŒŸSES - State Disaster Rescue Challenge Winners๐ŸŒŸ

We are excited and proud to bring the NSW SES State Disaster Rescue Challenge Shield and Safety Shield back home to Port Macquarie. The NSW SES Port Macquarie Unit has won the shield of this Bi-Annual event consecutively since 2017 proudly representing the professionalism and dedication of our volunteers and the NSW SES Service. We now progress to represent the NSW SES at the National Disaster Rescue Challenge where our team will fly to Queensland and represent NSW SES against all other states and territories.

Our team of 7 members were challenged with storm and rescue stands which involved demonstrating technical and medical skills against the clock. We bring back what we have learnt to the unit to ensure we provide the Port Macqaurie community with a professional and efficient emergency service.

We congratulate all other participants with special mention for runners up NSW SES Parramatta Unit and NSW SES - Gosford Unit on your outstanding results as well. Thank you to all.

Thank you to our fellow NSW SES members from Taree who joined us for training this evening.

Collaborating, sharing knowledge and demonstrating team work across units, members trained on rescuing casualties from heights & depths and using healing systems.

Trainers came up with an ingenious way of demonstrating a tensioned diagonal system for use in flood rescue.

๐Ÿด Professional Developmemt to Sharpen Our Skills - No Horsing Around Here! ๐Ÿฎ

Professional Development is an essential part of maintaining skill and currency whilst also learning best practice of new animal friendly rescue techniques. With the exclusive and generous help from our wonderful NSW SES Volunteers Association (SESVA), the NSW SES Port Macquarie Unit was able to receive valuable upskilling PD on the latest techniques to rescue horses, cows and many other large domesticated animals. This PD opportunity was delivered from no other than David King - a NSW pioneer and true professional in the teachings of Large Animal Rescue. With the many farms around the Port Macquarie Hastings area we are now better prepared to rescue those beloved farm friends.

A special thanks also to Highway Stables Port Macquarie, allowing us to use the local dam and premisis to enhance our skills in an authentic environment. A great day of learning was had looking at various lifting techniques, lifting assets including improved ways of sliding animals out of dams.
