Glenelg Shire Council was so pleased to be short-listed alongside some other amazing projects and exhibitions for the small project of the year (museum) at the Australian Museums and Galleries Association of Victoria 2026 Awards. Our Collections Management Coordinator attended the ceremony, alongside Micko Bell from Gunditj Mirring. Unfortunately Nyamat Mirring Gallery did not take out the award - the winner in this category was the very well-deserved Traces of Girlhood by the National Trust of Victoria and Heritage Victoria - congratulations!

📣𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗿 - 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 Two Rivers Gallery

We are excited to announce that this year's exhibition at the Portland Arts Centre in partnership with Two Rivers Gallery in Tyrendarra will be a solo show by Keerup-Mara Gunditjmara and Yorta Yorta artist, Jason Walker. It opens on Friday 29th May at 5:30pm.

In 2023 Jason designed the Western Bulldogs Indigenous Guernsey. The design represents Mirring (Country) on Gunditjmara, and is inspired by the Lake Condah Possum Skin Cloak.

The front of the guernsey features kooyang (eel) intertwined throughout red, white and blue hoops representing resilience.

Happening now! Come along to the Portland Arts Centre - we are open until 12:30 today and Carmel Wallace is here to chat to you about her current exhibition - Full Fathom Five! Explore the story of the SS Admella, wrecked in 1859, find out how the brave crew of the Portland Lifeboat rescued most of the survivors from the wreck after they spent eight harrowing days on rocks in the ocean. Carmel's works explore the wrecking of the vessel, the dramatic rescue of survivors and their care once they were brought to shore again in Portland. The exhibition includes footage of the Southern Ocean shot by Peter Corbett and accompanying music composed by Michael Wallace.

Open until 12:30pm today. FREE!

We have some exciting new to share! Nyamat Mirring, co-curated with Gunditj Mirring for the Portland Maritime Museum has been shortlisted in the Victorian Museums and Galleries Awards for 2026 in the small museum project category.

The Gallery was funded by the Australian National Maritime Museum Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme (MMAPSS) and opened in 2025.

Nyamat Mirring Gallery is open 7 days a week as part of the Portland Maritime Museum. It is located in the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre and is currently free to visit as we prepare for our next MMAPSS funded exhibition on the Bonney Upwelling and the Great Southern Reef.

Full Fathom Five: Works from the Life Jacket Project - Carmel Wallace

27 March - 1 May - Portland Arts Centre

Last Friday we opened Full Fathom Five, an exhibition exploring the story of SS Admella and the role that the crew of the Portland Lifeboat played in the rescue of survivors. Through the works she has created, Carmel examines the tragic story of SS Amdella and the human values of courage, endurance and selflessness alongside those of grief and heartache.

The works are accompanied by footage of the wild Southern Ocean shot by Peter Corbett of Powerhouse Productions and music composed by Michael Wallace.

The exhibition is free to attend and the Portland Arts Centre is open Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm.

Portland Arts Centre is proud to announce, Full Fathom Five, an exhibition by Carmel Wallace. Wallace was commissioned by the Glenelg Shire Council to create a contemporary sculpture referencing stories associated with the SS Admella which wrecked in 1859. The sculpture is featured as the central piece in this exhibition alongside a body of other new works created as part of this project. Each work is part of Wallace's consideration of how rescue and survival might be thought of now both in human and environmental terms. The exhibition will be complimented by dramatic footage of the Southern Ocean by Powerhouse Productions with music composed by Michael Wallace.
