Straight off the job into community engagement activities!

Thank you to members Josh & Colin who came directly from a request for assistance callout to spend time showing Bayview College students through our unit.

Opportunities like these are a great way to connect with local students and showcase how they can get involved in supporting their community.

ANZAC Day

Portland SES assisted with traffic management for the ANZAC Day parade, helping the community come together to honour and remember.

Brothers Taj and Elijah Roberts laid a wreath on behalf of the unit, paying tribute to those who came before us and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Tonight, 10 Portland volunteers spent their evening assisting the Portland RSL Sub-Branch in making wreaths for ANZAC Day. The effort was a small but meaningful way to honour members of the local community who made the ultimate sacrifice.

50 Year Service Presentation – Founding Member Gary Hein

It was a bittersweet and incredibly special moment for the Hein family as Gary was officially recognised for 50 remarkable years of dedication to the Portland VICSES Unit.

Gary’s service presentation was made even more significant with the presence of l: David Coldbeck OAM (Founding Regional Manager), Tim Wiebusch (Emergency Management Commissioner), Alistair Drayton (Chief Officer Operations), Greg Swindells (Deputy Chief Officer – Service Delivery, Western Region) and Gary’s son, Brad Hein.

As part of the presentation, we heard from David Coldbeck OAM, who reflected on the early days of forming the unit and recalled encouraging Gary to step forward. He shared stories of their early experiences and the long kasting memories they share.

In a touching moment, Brad spoke proudly of his father’s extraordinary commitment before calling upon his mother, Dianne Hein, to stand and be recognised. Dianne’s unwavering support and dedication to our unit over the past 50 years has been just as significant.

To conclude the evening, Mayor Councillor Karen Stephens presented Gary with thanks on behalf of the entire Glenelg Shire community, acknowledging his five decades of service and presenting him with a certificate of appreciation.

Fifty years of service is more than a milestone it is a lifetime of commitment to community, mateship and leadership.
