πŸ“ Greetings from Swan Hill, where SWVA Mayors are attending the Rural Councils Victoria Forum.

It was great to hear this morning's announcement by Shadow Minister for Local Government Bev McArthur MP that if elected, the Opposition will restore the Country Roads and Bridges Program, providing councils with untied funding to invest in local roads and bridges.

This is an issue SWVA has been consistently advocating for through our State Election Platform and Parliamentary engagement.

As rate notices begin arriving, many residents may be interested in understanding what waste and recycling charges cover and how they support waste services across the municipality.

Waste and recycling charges cover much more than collecting bins from the kerb.

These charges help fund:

πŸš› Collection services
β™» Transfer station operations
🏭 Processing and disposal costs
πŸ“š Community education programs

The aim is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by encouraging recycling, composting and reuse wherever possible.

Services such as recycling and FOGO help divert valuable materials from general waste, supporting more sustainable waste management and reducing the cost and environmental impact of landfill over time.

πŸ”¨ Thinking about building, renovating or adding a structure to your property?
In Victoria, many types of building work require a building permit before work starts, including:

🏠 New homes, sheds, garages and carports
🏑 Extensions and additions
πŸͺŸ Structural alterations
🌿 Decks and verandahs
🏊 Swimming pools and spas
πŸ—οΈ Some retaining walls and demolition works
βœ… Some small projects may be exempt, but only if specific conditions are met.

⚠️ Importantly, an exemption from a building permit does not necessarily mean no approvals are required. Planning permits, building regulations and other requirements may still apply.

Not sure if you need a permit? Check before you build. Starting work without the required approvals can result in penalties and costly issues later.

The Anderson Point steps in Portland are closed until further notice due to serious safety concerns.

Significant erosion, slope deterioration and cliff instability have made the area unsafe for public access.

Large swells, heavy rainfall and coastal erosion have impacted the steps over time, causing stability issues where the steps join the cliff face.

The closure includes additional safety signage as well as barricades to both the top and bottom of the steps.

DEECA is working with Glenelg Shire Council on cliff risk treatment at Portland Cliffs.

This information has been provided by DEECA and is being shared by Glenelg Shire Council to help keep our community informed. For the latest information on avian influenza (bird flu), please visit agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu

Human cases of H5 bird flu are very rare and it has not been shown to spread from person to person.
Those who work with or care for birds are more likely to be exposed to H5 bird flu because they have closer and more frequent contact with birds than most people.
Getting your seasonal flu vaccination is strongly recommended. It reduces the risk of becoming seriously ill if you are exposed to both seasonal flu and bird flu at the same time.
Flu vaccinations are available at your chemist, GP, Council or Aboriginal health service.
REPORT sick or dead wildlife online through the Agriculture Victoria website: agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu

As rate notices begin arriving, many residents may be interested in understanding the different charges that make up their rates notice.

Your rates notice is made up of several charges, including:

πŸ“ General Rates
πŸ“ Waste & Recycling Charges
πŸ“ Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund (ESVF)

Together, these make up your total rates notice.

Understanding each component can help you better understand how your rates are calculated and where charges are applied.
