HMAS Melbourne was one of 6 Majestic class light fleet aircraft carriers. It laid down for the Royal Navy (RN) as HMS Majestic on 15 April 1943 and launched in 1945.

In 1946 the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) wanted to establish a naval Fleet Air Arm (FAA). On 3 June 1947 the Australian Government approved the purchase of 2 aircraft carriers.

On the night of 31 May 1942, 3 Japanese miniature submarines launched an attack on Sydney Harbour. At around 12.30 am on 1 June, the submarine M-24 fired one of its torpedos at the American heavy cruiser, USS Chicago, but missed its intended target.

It exploded on impact beneath the RAN depot ship HMAS Kuttabul. Kuttabul sank immediately, and 21 Allied naval ratings – 19 Australian and 2 British – were killed.

To this day HMAS Kuttabul, also known as Fleet Base East, holds the legacy of the lost vessel and regularly hosts Japanese visitors to honour all those lost that night.

Members of the ADF and war veterans joined hands on the Queen Mary 2, while she was berthed alongside Kuttabul, to commemorate the role of the Queen Mary as a troop-ship in WWII. The ceremony involved 40 WWII Diggers, more than 30 sailors from Kuttabul, who marked a historic moment in time on the deck.
