We are partnering with researchers at the University of Wollongong to conduct a study into young children’s screen use. This research will help develop a future health promotion campaign on healthy screen use for children aged 3-5 years.

If you live in south west Sydney and are a parent or caregiver of a child aged 3-5 years, we’d love to hear from you! The survey is available in English, Arabic and Vietnamese.

Matt Lay, Paediatric Clinical Nurse Consultant, says one of his most memorable moments came early in his career.

As a new graduate, he realised paediatric nursing was where he belonged, supporting not just patients, but their families.

After caring for a distressed child and their family, Matt received a thank-you card that reinforced the impact of compassionate care.

“That moment confirmed why I became a nurse, to make a difference,” he said.

Today we’re spotlighting one of our superstars! From settling in Fairfield as a young child from Vietnam to now caring for the community that raised her, Fairfield Hospital physiotherapist Minh is proud to give back to where she belongs.

Minh knows trust, connection and care can truly change lives. She has been part of award winning health programs and drawn on her background to share culturally-appropriate COVID 19 messages in language.

“Working in the very community I grew up in is something I never take for granted. I know the people here. I understand their needs, their fears, their sense of humour. That familiarity builds trust, and that trust helps us deliver care that truly changes lives,” Minh shares.

“Physiotherapy has shown me the impact that gentle encouragement, resilience, and even the smallest adjustments can have on a person’s life.”

“Every day, I strive to make a difference, because for us, it’s all about changing lives for the better. I’m so proud to serve the community that raised me.”

Roya Hussein Omar, Midwifery Unit Manager, says she has always known she wanted to be a midwife.

Inspired by stories from a grandmother who was also a midwife, Roya developed an early understanding of the role as something deeply personal, not just clinical.

One moment that has stayed with her was caring for a first time mother in the postnatal period who was feeling overwhelmed and unsure, despite everything appearing fine on the surface.

Roya took the time to reassure her and create a safe, judgement free space to talk. As the conversation unfolded, the woman became more at ease, leaving feeling more confident and supported.

“It reminded me how important it is to support women after birth, not just during it,” Roya said. “Sometimes it’s not about clinical care, but about being present and helping someone feel heard during a vulnerable time.”

This International Day of the Midwife, we celebrate midwives like Roya, whose care and compassion make a lasting difference beyond the birth itself.
