It is more than a year since Gaetano Greco's passing, and we at Save the Preston Market Action Group are excited to support a local campaign to rename the Reservoir Library in his honour.

Cr Angela Villella will be tabling community submissions at the Council meeting on Tuesday, 25th of August. We encourage members of the Darebin community to write to their Councillors in the lead up to this meeting.

Reservoir Library is a place of learning and community right in the heart of Gaetano’s North West ward. We think it's a perfect place to honour Gaetano formally. Please give this campaign a follow for more details about how to support!

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has called for an immediate ban on immigration from 26 countries currently listed on the Australian Government’s “Do Not Travel” list.

The countries are predominantly located across the Middle East and Africa, with Hanson arguing that Australia should not accept migrants from countries facing significant conflict, instability or security concerns.

𝐈’𝐌 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃’𝐒 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐁𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐒

Hanson has taken a hard-line position on Australia’s immigration program, arguing that national security and Australia’s interests should come before increasing migration.

Her comments are likely to reignite the national debate over:

🇦🇺 Immigration levels
🛂 Border and visa policy
🔐 National security
🌍 Migration from conflict-affected countries
🏠 Housing and infrastructure pressures
👷 Australia’s workforce needs
🇦🇺 Social cohesion and integration

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆?

The proposal would effectively prevent people from the 26 identified countries from accessing Australia’s immigration program, according to Hanson’s call.

However, it is important to distinguish a political proposal from current Australian law. Hanson’s comments do not themselves create an immigration ban.

Australia’s migration system currently operates through legislation, visa requirements, ministerial directions and individual eligibility and character/security assessments.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐆𝐆𝐄𝐑 𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐈𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐃𝐄𝐁𝐀𝐓𝐄

Hanson’s comments come as immigration remains one of the most politically sensitive issues in Australia.

Supporters of tougher migration controls argue that Australia should have greater control over who enters the country and that security risks must be carefully considered.

Critics are likely to argue that a blanket country-based approach could unfairly affect people based on nationality and could prevent legitimate migrants, workers, students and family members from entering Australia.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐄𝐘 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

Should Australia’s immigration policy focus primarily on an individual applicant’s circumstances, or should additional restrictions apply based on the security situation in their country of origin?

🇦🇺 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊?

Should Australia introduce an immigration ban for people from countries on the Government’s “Do Not Travel” list?

YES — security should come first

or

NO — immigration decisions should be based on individual applicants
