Active Spaces in Darebin

Active Spaces in Darebin Active Spaces works with creative businesses to transform areas with an overabundance of vacant properties into economically vibrant destinations.

Called Active Spaces in Darebin, the project launched during Northern Exposure Festival in Northcote in 2012. Since then Active Spaces has facilitated 26 pop up shops across Darebin, generating over $300,000 in rent in otherwise vacant shops and over 100 jobs. Over 56 artists have shown their artworks in vacant shop windows. We have found that these activities transform vacant shop windows from po

ster clad, tagged and unkempt visual statements...into shining colourful beacons which are once again contributing to the life, energy and economy of the street. To date the following short-term businesses are still running:

Kiozwi Handmade, South Preston. Ike & Fly Collective, Westgarth. Inside the Brick, Fairfield. The Goodness Bureau, Thornbury. Melbourne Arts Club, Preston

Good Day Rentals, Preston

Multisonics, Preston

The Make-it Collective, Northcote

Northern Thread, Thornbury

Pop Up Playground, Preston

Mister Morris, Preston

Juanita's Kitchen, Preston

For a list of all the wonderful artists who have displayed their artwork in vacant shops send me an email: [email protected].

The Election Period (also known as Caretaker) will begin at 12pm on Tuesday, September 17, and conclude at 6pm on Saturday, October 26, 2024.
🔒 In accordance with the Local Government Act 2020, councils must follow specific guidelines during the caretaker period leading up to elections.
🤔 So, what does Caretaker mean?
📰 This allocated time around Council Elections ensures that Council has processes in place that will ensure elections are conducted fairly and ethically – and safeguarding the authority of the incoming Council.

⏯️ This is why during the Caretaker period:
• Councils are restricted from making certain decisions, so most community consultations will pause.
• Material produced by councils must not influence the election outcome.
• Comments on Council’s social media will be disabled, to avoid any comments made about or by election candidates or the election.
• You will see a reduction in our posts
• Public Question and Submission Time is suspended

💬 If you have any questions or wish to contact us, we’re still available:
Phone: 03 8470 8888

And will be responding to non-election related private messages.
