Fog can reduce visibility to just a few metres. Can other boaters see you?

When operating in fog, darkness or other conditions restricting visibility, you must use the correct navigation lights.

Navigation lights help other vessels identify your position and direction of travel, reducing the risk of a collision.

Before heading out on the water, ensure you:
✔ Check your navigation lights are working
✔ Make sure they're fitted correctly
✔ Turn them on whenever visibility is restricted

Werribee South boat ramp works are now underway 🚤

The upgrade includes:
• New pontoon and ramp lane, increasing lanes to 7
• 4 new central gangways and extended western pontoon
• All-abilities access
• New stormwater infrastructure and resealed parking area
• Reconfigured parking with more rigging and tie-down spaces and improved traffic flow

These changes will make the Werribee South boat ramp safer, more accessible and more efficient8 for boaters and paddlers.

The boat ramp will remain closed until completion, which is expected in late 2026. Alternate boat ramps include Altona, Avalon Beach and Newport (the Warmies).

It's not just the cold that puts you at risk. It's the shock.

In winter, falling overboard can trigger an immediate cold shock response that makes it difficult to breathe and stay afloat.

If you end up in the water:
• Get your breathing under control
• Keep your head above water
• Activate your emergency equipment as soon as possible
• Stay with your vessel if it's safe to do so

A properly fitted lifejacket can help keep your airway clear while you regain control.

Cold water can quickly lead to hypothermia.

If you end up in the water, every minute counts. Once you've regained control of your breathing, your next priority is slowing heat loss while waiting for rescue.

If it's safe to do so:
• Stay with your vessel
• Keep movement to a minimum
• Wear your lifejacket
• If you're with others, stay close together to help conserve body heat

25 July is World Drowning Prevention Day.

According to Life Saving Victoria and Royal Life Saving Society - Australia, between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025:
• 52 people fatally drowned in Victorian waterways
• 71% were males
• 40% of drowning fatalities are men aged between 25 and 64
• 65+ year-olds have the highest drowning rate of all age groups

Certain situations increase the chance of falling overboard or capsizing, like boating alone, at night, in poor weather or on rough water.

Recent rainfall has created hazardous conditions on some Victorian waterways.

Floodwaters can hide serious dangers:
• Strong currents beneath calm-looking water
• Submerged trees, branches and other debris
• Missing or underwater navigation markers
• Reduced boat control in fast-flowing water
• Extremely cold water that can quickly lead to cold shock and hypothermia

Before heading out, check BOM for flood warnings, check local waterway conditions, and if waterways are flooded, postpone your trip.

We navigate waterways alongside whales, dolphins, seals, seabirds and other protected marine animals.

Unfortunately, that means that boaters and water-users can encounter stranded or injured wildlife.

These incidents include vessel collisions, entanglement (caused by marine debris and fishing industry equipment), and strandings.

If you encounter an injured, stranded or entangled animal:
• Keep your distance
• Put your safety first
• Contact the right wildlife response service for help
