Farm dams can experience leaks or total failure for several reasons.

Dry conditions present a window to look at repair options, but not all dams are going to be suitable for restoration.

Want to learn about what to consider when repairing a dam? Read on: https://go.vic.gov.au/49rJcLU

Using remotely piloted aircraft for aerial spraying? ✔️

Setting the flight path and walking away? ❌

Remotely piloted aircraft, or drones, can be a useful tool for aerial spraying. But not all their features can be deployed in the paddock.

Fully autonomous spraying is not allowed under Victorian rules or aviation safety laws.

Pilots must maintain control at all times and actively monitor the flight from start to finish.

This is important to reduce the risk of spray drift, crashes and chemical exposure if conditions change during a flight.

You must not use a drone that:

🔹 flies without the pilot being able to intervene
🔹 sprays chemicals without a manual override
🔹 continues operation if communication with the pilot is lost.

Yesterday at our Ellinbank SmartFarm in Gippsland, we announced more support for farmers. Our scientists are working on new RNA-based treatments that could help protect crops and livestock from pests and disease.

The 2 new projects will look at:

- biopesticides to target pests like grape phylloxera and almond carpophilus beetle

- mRNA treatment to help dairy cows better fight mastitis.

Our goal is simple - giving farmers more options to manage pests and diseases, while reducing reliance on chemicals and antibiotics over time.

While the research is still underway, it’s part of a broader effort to back practical innovation that supports productivity, animal health and long-term sustainability on-farm.

The projects are funded through mRNA Victoria’s RNA in Agriculture Grant Program.

The Ballarat Regional Animal Facility is one step closer to construction, with the City of Ballarat announcing the award of tender to H Troon Pty Ltd.

The new facility, set to start construction in late-2026, will lift the standard of care for thousands of stray, lost, abandoned or abused animals from around the region.

We are investing $11.5 million in the Regional Animal Facility, along with $3 million from the City of Ballarat.

Congratulations to Professor Jennie Pryce, our Research Director of Genomics and Cellular Sciences, on being inducted into the Journal of Dairy Science Club 100.

This honour recognises researchers who have authored or co-authored 100 or more papers in the Journal of Dairy Science, placing Professor Pryce among an elite group of fewer than 50 scientists worldwide.

Jennie’s work is a powerful example of how science and innovation are driving productivity and sustainability in agriculture. Through her leadership, she has transformed cutting-edge genomics and data into practical tools that improve herd performance, profitability and resilience.

A leader in both research and mentorship, Jennie has also helped shape the next generation of animal breeding scientists, with her former PhD students now contributing to industry and academia worldwide.

Her career reflects Victoria’s strength as a global leader in agricultural research, where evidence-based science delivers real outcomes for farmers and industry.

👏 Congratulations, Jennie!
