🚨 Suspicious Fire – Childcare Centre, Turramurra 🚨

At approximately 4:15am today, Gordon A Platoon was dispatched to a reported structure fire at a childcare centre on the Pacific Highway in Turramurra. Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 050 Hornsby and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 058 Beecroft also responded to the incident.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the building's sprinkler system had successfully contained the blaze, resulting in minor damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been deliberately lit, with reports indicating that accelerant was used throughout the premises. NSW Police Force have established a crime scene, and the incident is under active investigation.

We commend the swift response of all attending crews and the effectiveness of the building's fire safety systems.

If you have any information related to this incident, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

🔥 It's Smoke Alarm Action Day! 🔥

Today’s the day to do one simple thing that could save your life — check your smoke alarms.

Working smoke alarms double your chance of surviving a house fire, but too often, we find alarms that are flat, missing, or out of date.

✅ Test your alarms by pressing the button — you should hear a loud beep.
✅ Replace batteries if needed.
✅ Make sure there’s a smoke alarm installed on every level of your home, especially near bedrooms.
✅ If your alarm is more than 10 years old, it’s time for a replacement.

🚒 This week's building fire in Pymble is a powerful reminder of how fast fire can take hold. Don’t wait for an emergency — take action now.

For those who need assistance, Fire and Rescue NSW offers free Home Fire Safety Visits. During these visits, firefighters will:

Check that you have working smoke alarms in suitable areas.
Install a long-life battery-powered smoke alarm if you don't have one.
Replace existing smoke alarm batteries at no cost.
Provide personalized fire safety advice tailored to your home.

To request a Home Fire Safety Visit, visit: https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/visits or contact your local fire station.

Let’s all stay fire safe — together.
Be Smart. Take Part.

🚒 Building Fire – Pacific Highway, Pymble 🚒

Just after 4:00am this morning, Gordon Fire Station was responded to a building fire on the Pacific Highway in Pymble, directly across the road from the station.

On arrival, crews were faced with a dry-cleaning business fully alight, with intense flames issuing from the structure. Firefighters got straight to work, quickly supported by crews from Ryde and Gladesville Fire Stations.

A short time later, Hornsby’s Aerial Pumper was brought in to attack the fire from above and help knock out any remaining hotspots.

Also on scene were NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, and the Transport Management Centre (TMC), all working together to manage traffic, provide medical support, and ensure scene safety.

🚧 The southbound lanes of the Pacific Highway were closed for around two hours, with light traffic diverted and heavy vehicles held until the road was cleared.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation.

🔥 A timely reminder: June 1st is Smoke Alarm Action Day. Take a few minutes to check your smoke alarms and make sure your household is protected. A working smoke alarm could make all the difference.

Thanks to all responding agencies for their teamwork and to the community for your patience during this morning’s disruption.

🚨 Incident Response – Mona Vale Road, St Ives 🚨

Shortly after 6:00am this morning, while returning to station from a previous call in Belrose, Gordon Fire Station’s crew came across a 9-vehicle bumper-to-bumper collision on the eastbound side of Mona Vale Road, St Ives.

Our firefighters immediately stopped to render assistance and assess the scene. Both eastbound and westbound lanes were heavily impacted by floodwaters due to intense early morning rainfall, significantly affecting visibility and road conditions.

During the incident, another vehicle stalled in the floodwater, further complicating traffic. We were soon assisted on scene by our friends from NSW RFS Ku-ring-gai Brigade and NSW RFS - Terrey Hills Brigade, who helped move the stalled vehicle and clear a blocked stormwater drain — allowing the floodwater to begin subsiding.

🚧 Safety Reminder: If you encounter floodwater on the road, turn around and find an alternate route. If it’s flooded – forget it.

A big thank you to the community for your patience during this morning’s disruption. Stay safe out there!

Charli the wonder Dog

It was another busy night for Gordon’s crew when just after 6:00pm they received a distressing call asking to help Charli. Charli’s owner had rung triple zero to say that as they had left the elevator Charli had been caught inside, the doors had closed and poor Charli was now hanging by their lead. With all speed 37 crew made their way to the unit block thinking the worst. G*ining entry to the floor using specific entry tools firefighters made access to the lift whilst the very distressed family waited outside in the fire stairs. As the lift doors were forced there was no sounds from within but as a gap was formed a small bark came from inside. Finally firefighters were able to fully gain entry to the lift to find Charli had somehow survived relatively unscathed. After a quick check over and cuddle from his loving family Charli was taken to a vet to ensure no serious damage had occurred. Yeah Charli.

No sooner had crews packed up after rescuing Charli than the bells went off again. This time for a second alarm electrical fire in a electrical kiosk. Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 050 Hornsby were first on scene and immediately started to evacuate the area and put in exposure protection measures. Fire and Rescue NSW Station 058 Beecroft soon arrived as backup. This was quickly followed by Fire and Rescue NSW Station 040 Willoughby, Gordon’s crew and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 042 Ryde. Eventually the complex operation was able to contain the fire leaving many residents off Banockburn Rd and surrounds without power.

It’s that time of year again.
After rescuing an elderly man from a house fire earlier today it was the ultimate surprise to receive an impromptu visit from the beautiful Fire and Rescue NSW band this evening.

The band played a number of Christmas carols and bought a smile to Gordon’s B platoon. It was also a nice occasion for crews to reflect on such a busy year and acknowledge the joy they bring to our beloved community when they are facing what can be the worst day of their life. So thank you all and have a great Christmas and a happy new year from all of us at Gordon Fire and Rescue.

As we move into the warmer months every firefighters gaze starts to look towards the bushland that surrounds the urban fringe and the prevailing winds and weather conditions. With some significant rain events over the previous years vegetation growth has grown rapidly and many parts of the bush are thick. For us at Fire and rescue it means we need to be prepared so today our crews got out our remote access fire pump (aka Davey Pump) to check its operational readiness and to practice its uses and applications. All crews will go through all our summer bushfire equipment in the coming weeks so we’re ready to go. With all that in mind now is an essential time to prepare your property for the potential of summer fire conditions.
- Clear gutters and roofs,
- remove flammable objects and clutter away from houses,
- clear yards of flammable vegetation,
- check hoses and water tanks,
- clear the hydrant of grass if one is located out the front of your house,
- check on your elderly neighbours to see if they need help preparing their house,
- check everyone has working smoke alarms (if not give us a call and we’ll install some for free),
- have a bushfire emergency plan (check out our website for details).

If you need any information or help preparing your home for summer give us a call and ask us to conduct a free home Fire safety check. Also remember that there will be a significant amount of hazard reduction burns being conducted at the moment. Download and check the “fires near me” app to see if the smoke you’re seeing is a hazard reduction before calling 000. If you see a fire unattended then dial 000 immediately.

Whilst you were sleeping:

Gordon firefighters along with our mates from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 050 Hornsby Fire and Rescue NSW Station 075 Berowra and Fire and Rescue station 058 Beecroft last night conducted a comprehensive drill and incident planning exercise in the NorthConnex tunnel to develop better response protocols for when emergencies happen. The behind the scenes work that has gone into creating a safe tunnel for commuters in an emergency is nothing short of an engineering marvel. Part of the drill involved watching the deluge system activate which has the capacity to pump out more than 2900lts per minute supplied by two 2500klt water tanks. Although the drill ran well into the wee hours, it was fascinating to see and vital to understand how these systems can assist us in an emergencies.

Every pair of boots is a sister, a brother, a father and a mother. This is what we mean when we ask for respect, protect and value your firefighters. Please show us your support and sign this petition. It’s super easy and could save a life.

17 pairs of boots out the front of Fire and Rescue NSW Station 027 Parramatta station representing the 17 firefighter cancer deaths in FRNSW that have been recognized as an occupational cancer since the original Presumptive Cancer Legislation. 17 Firefighters who have died of cancer since 2018 who deserve to be honoured for their service. As it stands they do not appear on the FRNSW Memorial Roll.

What is unknown is how many firefighters who have been diagnosed with cancer or who have died from cancer that has not been recognized as an occupational injury. We have been to 5 funerals this year for firefighters who have died of cancer that have not been covered under the current Presumptive Cancer Legislation.

There is either no records being kept or those that are keeping records are unwilling to share the details.

*All firefighters who get cancer deserve to be covered.*

This should be a non-negotiable. Every other state in Australia has expanded the list of cancers that are covered by their legislation. The NSW Government is lagging behind. If you are able we ask you to send a message to your State MP.

Do your children hang out at the St Ives Village Square Skatepark? If so this is what they may be up to. Kids lighting fires and blowing up aerosol cans is becoming a regular and persistent issue at both the skatepark and the memorial park at Turramurra. Not only is this incredibly dangerous for them and for other kids who are hanging around them. To top it off when we arrive we are often met by drunk and belligerent youth who make our job even more difficult. It’s so incredibly frustrating for us, as it has the potential to take us away from attending an actual critical emergency such as the tragedy that occurred on Mona Vale and Link Rd the other night. Please, if your children are regulars at these locations speak to them so we can try to change this dangerous habit.
