Amor, Liebe, Kärlek, - Every language has a word for LOVE.
With Valentine's Day approaching, I thought we would look at how it came about.
Also, Valentine's Day isn't all about diamonds and expense. A simple hand written note of affection, a few hand picked flowers, there are many ways to express 'Love' and appreciation.

Key Origins & Influences:
Martyrdom of St. Valentine: Legends describe several Christians named Valentine executed by Emperor Claudius II for aiding lovers and performing secret marriages, with one writing a farewell note signed "from your Valentine" before his death on February 14th.
Pagan Festival of Lupercalia: Celebrated in mid-February, this Roman fertility festival involved rituals where men chose women from an urn, a practice Pope Gelasius I tried to replace.
Medieval Romance: The association with love solidified in the Middle Ages, partly through poets like Geoffrey Chaucer, who linked February 14th with birds choosing mates.

Evolution into a Romantic Holiday:
Early Traditions: The first Valentines were handwritten notes exchanged by lovers, evolving from handwritten letters to mass-produced cards with advancements in printing technology.

Commercialization: The holiday grew into a significant commercial event, especially with the introduction of mass-produced cards in the 19th century, making it a major card-sending holiday.

Merry Christmas to everyone.
