Ever wondered what this contraption on the platforms is? No, it’s not just some old equipment on display, it’s an active piece of our railway’s infrastructure.
This is a signal lever, which operates the signals at the end of the yard to tell approaching trains whether or not it is safe for them to come into the platform (basically a manually operated traffic light for trains).
You’ll often see our volunteer guards operating these immediately after a train arrives to a station, or just before departure, in preparation for the next arrival.
