โ˜€๏ธ They say change is as good as a holiday โ€“ and now you can have both!

๐Ÿ  Our new cabins have been placed at the Queenscliff Recreation Reserve to replace two older ones that were no longer fit to accommodate tourists.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ The cabins were made offsite and craned in this morning, with both featuring one bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and a sunny north facing deck โ€“ perfect for watching our local sport teams in action.

๐Ÿ“… These cabins will be available for your visiting friends and family come July.

โ™ป๏ธ As you get ready for your hard waste collection, please remember that some items canโ€™t be placed out for collection and need a little extra care to keep our community safe. This includes asbestos, gas cylinders, chemicals, sharps and medical waste, and batteries. These items can be safely recycled, reused, or disposed of through approved services and drop-off locations.

๐Ÿค The time has come to say goodbye to the much-loved Ocean View Kiosk team after more than 18 years of service to our community. Council appreciates the commitment and goodwill Darren, Jude and the team have extended to both our community and its many visitors.

โš’๏ธ The existing kiosk has reached the end of its life, and as such the site will undergo a refresh, including the installation of a new shipping container-style kiosk. The kiosk is located on Crown land; Council is required to follow State Government Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) policy and run an Expression of Interest (EOI) process when a lease becomes available.

๐Ÿ“‘ This ensures the process is fair, transparent, and accessible to all interested applicants and once the process is completed, the lease then needs to be endorsed by DEECA confirming Council is following the legislated process. The current lease will conclude on 30 June.

โ™ฅ๏ธ We know Darren and Jude have become a valued part of the community, generously supporting many local groups and organisations over the years. We sincerely thank them for their dedication, friendship, and contribution to the Borough, and on behalf of the entire Borough of Queenscliffe, we offer a heartfelt thank you.

๐Ÿ”” Council looks forward to sharing updates on the transformation, progress and announcing the new operators along the way

๐Ÿšจ Have you checked your smoke alarms recently?

โ™จ๏ธ As we head into the cooler months and spend more time indoors, now is a great time to test your smoke alarms, replace batteries if needed and check the expiry date - most alarms need replacing after 10 years. A few minutes of maintenance could make all the difference in an emergency.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Thanks to CFA for this important reminder. Please take a moment today to check your smoke alarms and help keep your household safe.

โ™ป๏ธ The Boroughโ€™s Hard Waste Collection is happening from Monday 29 June โ€“ Friday 3 July. Itโ€™s a great opportunity to get rid of some of those unwanted items laying around the home.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ To keep our community safe, please avoid placing loose or lightweight items such as metal sheets on the nature strip that could become windblown and cause injury or damage.

๐Ÿšฎ Polystyrene is another item that could be blown away, which we donโ€™t want to see polluting our beautiful streets and coastlines. If an item cannot be safely secured or is at risk of blowing away, please use the appropriate recycling or disposal option instead.

๐Ÿ‘‰ You can find this, plus plenty more information about Hard Waste on our website - boq.news/HardWaste See less

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Mayor Donnie Grigau has joined City of Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj, Associate Professor Daniel Oโ€™Brien, Surf Coast Shire Deputy Mayor Tony Phelps, and the Barwon South West Public Health Unit to raise awareness of the increasing number of Buruli ulcer cases across the region.

๐Ÿค The three local government areas are supporting a regional awareness campaign focused on early detection and treatment, helping to improve health outcomes for our communities.

Three local councils experiencing increasing cases of Buruli ulcer have joined forces with the Barwon South West Public Health Unit to raise awareness as infections continue to rise across the region.

Buruli ulcer (also known as Bairnsdale ulcer) is a skin disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. The bacteria produce toxins that damage skin tissue, leading to ulceration and skin loss.

In recent years, cases in Victoria have risen significantly, particularly across the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas. The disease is now spreading into new areas, including Melbourne, the Surf Coast and parts of Greater Geelongโ€”especially Belmont, Highton, Newtown, Grovedale, Waurn Ponds, Wandana Heights and Marshall.

Last year saw the highest number of cases on record for the Geelong and Surf Coast region.
While research led by Barwon Health and CSIRO is ongoing, early diagnosis and treatment remains critical to improving patient outcomes.

The City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire, and Borough of Queenscliffe - local government areas where cases are increasing - are supporting a regional awareness campaign to encourage early detection and treatment.
