The Old Hospital and air raid shelter
The Old Hospital was built on the hillside of Queenstown in 1939-1940, complete with an air raid shelter. The hospital is a two storey masonry building built to service the West coast of Tasmania. The buiding remains largely unalterd since being built in around 1940. The shelter was constructed in the 1940’s and was built into the hillside and provided adequate accommodation for all of the hospital patients and staff in an emergency. The shelter was constructed entirely by voluntary labour. The work took four months to complete and involved 150 feet of tunneling and timbering. They removed 800 tonnes of earth and added bunk beds, seats, etc. The air raid shelter is presently closed but there are hope that the door will be uncovered and if structurally sound inside, it may be open for viewing. Now in 2020, the hospital owners are looking to conduct private and group tours through the hospital. The two types of tours will cover history of the building and the shared stories of the hospital from the residents of Queenstown. Also, paranormal tours will be on offer to those tour participants wanting to connect with the resident spirits of the hospital and the nurses home adjacent to the hospital.
